The short answer. For a Mercedes-AMG A45 or A45 S W177, the most complete valved exhaust is a cat-back that replaces the whole system after the downpipe: the Rog system is made to order from your car's VIN, in 304 stainless steel or titanium, with a straight pipe or resonator at the same price, from €2,890 with the remote included. Valves closed, the AMG stays civilised; valves open, the M139 finds an angry, full tone again.

The A45 (387 hp, 480 Nm) and the A45 S (421 hp, 500 Nm) share the M139, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that Mercedes-AMG presents as the most powerful series-production unit in the world. With its particulate filter, the W177's factory system keeps it very tame: on our 0 to 10 scale, valves open, it sits at 3. Here are the four options to give it its voice back, and what each one brings.

On the A45, the cat-back is what changes the character most: a silencer on its own leaves the rest of the factory system filtering the sound and imposes the voice chosen by its manufacturer. The Rog system replaces everything after the downpipe and lets you choose the material and the character, then the volume on every drive with the valves.

How to choose.

  • The sound. On the Rog system, the straight pipe gives the raw sound of the M139 and the resonator a rounder, slightly softer voice, at the same price (see straight pipe or resonator). Valves open, the tone turns angry and full, with rich crackles on the overrun.
  • The material. Titanium weighs about 40% less than stainless steel for the same design and comes brushed, gold or purple. 304 stainless steel gives a fuller note.
  • What the system replaces. The more pipework a system replaces, the more voice you gain. On the M139, the downpipe carries the catalytic converter: it only adds power with an ECU remap.
  • Road use and inspections. Valves closed, a Rog system stays close to the stock sound, and the cat-back alone or the 200-cell downpipe keep a catalytic converter.

Frequently asked questions.

What is the best valved exhaust for a Mercedes-AMG A45 W177?
The one that gives you the sound you want. The Rog system is a valved cat-back made from your VIN: you choose the material and the character, straight pipe or resonator at the same price, and you keep a civilised AMG with the valves closed, remote included.

What does a cat-back replace on the A45 W177?
Everything after the downpipe: pipes, silencers, valves and outlets. A silencer on its own leaves the rest of the factory system in place. The downpipe, which carries the M139's catalytic converter, remains a separate option.

Is the system the same for the A45 and the A45 S?
Yes: at 387 or 421 hp, both W177 versions from 2020 to 2022 take the same Rog system. Your VIN lets us check fitment before the system is made.

Does the A45 S need an ECU remap?
Not for the cat-back, which leaves the factory electronics untouched. The M139's potential opens up with the downpipe and a remap at an approved tuner: published figures for the 421 hp version reach 490 hp and 600 Nm.

Will a valved A45 pass its inspection?
Valves closed, the AMG stays close to its stock sound, and the cat-back alone or the 200-cell downpipe keep a catalytic converter. The Rog system has no ECE certificate: the rules and the decision belong to your country's inspection (see the links above), and the catless version is for track use only.
