How it works

Why pipe length changes the sound.

A twin-turbo straight-six sends its gases into two pipes. Everything happens where they meet.

  1. Two groups of three cylinders

    On the S55 as on the S58, each turbo receives the gases of three cylinders. Two pipes then run to the back of the car.

  2. Different lengths, offset pulses

    When the two pipes are not the same length, the gas pulses reach the junction slightly out of step. The sound turns rough, a little raspy.

  3. Equal lengths, pulses in rhythm

    Equal Length evens out the two paths. The pulses meet in time and the note rises in frequency: higher, cleaner, smoother. The Z-pipe adds a Z-shaped geometry that crosses the flows and pushes the note higher still.

What is the difference between Standard, Equal Length and Z-pipe?

The Standard design follows the factory routing: a full, direct sound with a strong twin-turbo character. Equal Length gives both pipes the same length before they meet: the pulses synchronise and the note becomes higher, smoother and less raspy. The Z-pipe adds a Z-shaped geometry to Equal Length that crosses the flows: the note climbs very high, with an exotic tone.

Is my car compatible?

Equal Length and the Z-pipe are available for six models: BMW M3 G80 and M4 G82, M3 F80 and M4 F82, M2 G87, M2 Competition F87, X3 M F97 and X4 M F98. Every exhaust is made for its chassis. Not sure about your version? Write to us, we reply within 24 hours.

How does the exhaust sound on a cold start?

On a cold start, the engine idles higher for a few moments to warm up: that is when a sports exhaust is most audible. With the valves closed, you keep a sound close to the factory one. Once the engine is warm, open the valves and the exhaust releases the full voice of the straight-six.

How do the valves work?

The valves open and close the silencer in real time. Closed, the exhaust stays discreet for everyday driving. Open, the sound is fully unleashed. Depending on the system chosen when configuring, they are controlled by the Rog remote or managed by the car, as from the factory.
