Resonator vs muffler: centre silencer, rear silencer, what's the difference?
Updated: 9 October 2026.
In short. The silencer (muffler) lowers the volume of the sound; the resonator changes its tone by damping certain frequencies. On most cars, the “centre silencer” is in fact a resonator: it sits on the mid-pipe, ahead of the rear silencer. The two do not do the same job: they complement each other.
Centre silencer or resonator: often the same part.
A factory exhaust often has two or three boxes: sometimes a front silencer, a centre (or middle) silencer and a rear silencer. The centre silencer is most often a straight-through absorption resonator: a perforated tube wrapped in wool, which works on tone more than volume. That is why the two words often refer to the same part.
The role of the rear silencer.
The rear silencer lowers the sound level across a wide range of frequencies. Depending on its design, it routes the gases through chambers that reflect part of the sound back towards the engine, passes them through perforated tubes packed with wool, or combines the two. On a valved exhaust, it offers two paths: with the valves closed, the gases go through the quietest section; with the valves open, they take the freest path.
The role of the resonator.
The resonator does not try to lower the overall volume. It targets frequencies: the metallic edge and the treble for a straight-through absorption resonator, one precise low note for a Helmholtz resonator. The sound keeps its strength, but its voice changes. Details in Exhaust resonator: what does it do?
Resonator vs rear silencer: side by side.
| Resonator (centre silencer) | Rear silencer | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Changes the tone | Lowers the volume |
| Frequencies | Specific, targeted frequencies | A wide range |
| Position in the exhaust | Mid-pipe | Rear of the exhaust |
| Construction | Perforated tube and wool, or a tuned chamber | Chambers, perforated tubes and wool, valves possible |
| On a Rog exhaust | Option on more than 140 models, same price as the straight pipe | Always fitted, with valves |
Who does what in an exhaust system.
- The catalytic converter cleans the gases. On our systems, the front section can take 200-cell sports catalytic converters.
- The resonator rounds off the voice. “Round · resonator” option on the models concerned.
- The rear silencer sets the volume. Always fitted on our systems.
- The valves choose the path. Closed for everyday driving, open when you want to hear the exhaust: see Valved exhausts.

Frequently asked questions.
Is the resonator before or after the silencer?
Before: it sits on the mid-pipe, between the catalytic converters and the rear silencer.
Are a “centre silencer” and a “resonator” the same thing?
Often, yes. On many cars, the factory centre silencer is a straight-through absorption resonator. Performance exhaust makers then talk about “resonated” or “non-resonated” versions.
Can the centre silencer be removed?
Yes, by replacing it with a straight pipe: that is the “resonator delete”. The sound becomes a little louder and rawer, and power does not change measurably. Details in Resonator delete: what it really changes.
Can you have a resonator without a silencer?
Yes, on some very free-flowing systems, but the sound then becomes very loud. On a Rog exhaust, the valved rear silencer is always fitted; the resonator is an option in place of the straight pipe.
Does a resonator make the car quieter?
A little, but that is not its main role: above all, it changes the tone. On a Rog exhaust, the system stays loud with or without a resonator.
Should you remove the silencer or the resonator for more sound?
The rear silencer does most of the volume reduction; the resonator mainly shapes the tone. On a valved exhaust, it is the valves that free up the sound when you decide.
