BMW M3 / M4 F80 / F82 / F83 Valved Exhaust (2014-2019)
Valves
Operated by remote control, paired in our workshop.
Estimated at 0.50 m from the outlet, 45°, 2,000 rpm with a warm engine. Allow ± 2 dB depending on the engine and measuring point. A 3 dB difference is audible in a direct comparison; 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.

The BMW M3 F80, M4 F82 and F83 exhaust in detail.
The first turbocharged M3, the F8x generation brings together the M3 F80 saloon, the M4 F82 Coupé and the M4 F83 Convertible around the S55: a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six with forged crankshaft and closed deck, 431 hp in standard form and 450 hp as a Competition, 550 Nm in both cases. All three body styles take the same system, described by the supplier for cars built from 2014 to 2019. For a 2020 car, your VIN lets us check; the M3 G80 and M2 Competition have their own listings.
Every F8x owner knows the reputation: a flat, synthetic factory sound, supplemented by Active Sound Design, which plays an artificial sound through the speakers. The car goes faster than it sounds. This valved cat-back lets the S55 express itself mechanically, and you choose its voice: Standard, without a resonator, for the raw grain of the twin-turbo; Equal Length, whose two pipes of equal length raise the note and make it more consistent; Equal Length + Z-pipe for an exotic high pitch like a Japanese naturally aspirated engine.
With the valves closed, the M3 or M4 stays close to its stock sound for everyday journeys. Fitting is done without welding, using clamps and gaskets, in about two hours, with a system built to your VIN; the valves follow the factory control or the Rog remote.
The “Manifold” option sells the S55’s downpipes, with their catalytic converter: on their own, they change the voice and the weight, and it is the ECU remap that turns them into horsepower. The 200-cell downpipes keep the S55’s exhaust gas treatment for the road; with 100 cells, the car is accepted or not depending on the vehicle and the rules in your country; the decat version is reserved for track use. On the cat-back side, 304 stainless steel thickens the twin-turbo’s grain, while titanium brightens it and removes around 40% of the mass.

Questions about the BMW M3 F80 / M4 F82 3.0T exhaust.
Does the M4 Convertible F83 take the same system as the M4 Coupé F82?
Yes: the F83 Convertible shares the system of the M4 F82 and the M3 F80, with the same designs, materials and downpipes. As with every order, the workshop checks your F83's VIN before manufacture, especially for a 2020 car.
Why is the S55 said to be the BMW six-cylinder that responds best to Stage 2?
Because its mechanicals can handle very high outputs: with downpipes and an ECU remap at an approved tuner, the page publishes 530 hp and 720 Nm for both the base version and the Competition, whereas the cat-back alone makes do with the factory electronics.
Does a modified M3 F80, M4 F82 or F83 pass vehicle inspection?
Valves closed, for a voice close to stock; the 200-cell downpipes or the original front section leave emissions control in place, the 100-cell ones are accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use.
Standard, Equal Length or Z-pipe on an M4 F82?
Standard for the raw grain of the twin-turbo and volume; Equal Length for a higher-pitched, smoother inline-six that makes you forget the synthetic factory sound; Z-pipe for the highest note, reserved for fans of extreme experiences.
Does Active Sound Design stay active with the Rog system?
The system does not modify the car’s electronics; what changes is that the mechanical sound of the S55 finally comes out of the exhaust, with the valves open, instead of being suggested by the speakers.
