Estimated at 0.50 m from the outlet, 45°, 2,000 rpm with a warm engine. Allow ± 2 dB depending on the engine and measuring point. A 3 dB difference is audible in a direct comparison; 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.

The MOT and your exhaust
At the MOT, exhaust noise is judged by ear, with no sound meter: valves closed, your car sounds very close to stock. A cat-back leaves your factory cat and sensors untouched, a 200-cell sports cat keeps emissions control, and the MOT tester decides.
On the road
Valves closed around town, your car sounds very close to stock, and you open them whenever you like. Where councils use noise cameras, they target behaviour such as revving and racing.
Your documents
Each system is built from the VIN on your V5C, and an exhaust isn't one of the changes you record on it. We send the technical documentation free on request, for the MOT or for your insurer.
Your insurance
Insurers usually want to know about modifications, so let yours know: our free technical documentation makes it easy.
