The X1 F48 is BMW's compact SUV: practical, versatile, made for town as well as weekend getaways. In B48 form, for the 2016 to 2019 model years, it gets a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 192 hp and 280 Nm. A lively engine, rendered almost mute by a factory exhaust designed for discretion. This guide helps you choose the ROG configuration that will finally give it some character.

The B48: the X1 F48's modern turbocharged four-cylinder

The B48 belongs to BMW's modular engine family. It is a 2.0-litre direct-injection four-cylinder, boosted by a twin-scroll turbo. In the X1 F48 presented here, it delivers 192 hp and 280 Nm. The torque, available early, is enough to move the SUV with ease, in town as well as on fast roads, without having to work the engine hard.

On a turbocharged four-cylinder fitted to a family SUV, the factory exhaust has a single mission: to make you forget the engine. The ROG valved exhaust replaces it and gives you the choice. With the valves closed, the X1 keeps its factory acoustic comfort; with them open, the B48 gains a fuller sound that makes driving more engaging. No modification to the engine or the ECU is needed.

How the exhaust on your BMW X1 B48 F48 is put together

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under your BMW X1 B48 F48, all the way to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. This is the part where most of our research and development goes, the part that shapes the sound, and it fits without touching the engine or the ECU.

Your BMW X1 B48 F48 in figures

An exhaust system is judged first by ear and on the scales. The extra horsepower comes from an ECU remap.

Stage 2420 Nm

The ROG exhaust works with or without an ECU remap. To get the full potential out of your BMW X1 B48 F48, we recommend taking it to an approved tuning centre afterwards.

With its turbo and recent design, the B48 leaves headroom beneath its factory calibration that a Stage 2 remap seeks to exploit. The result depends on the engine, its maintenance and the tuner. The ROG exhaust supports this approach by giving the X1 a voice in keeping with its new temperament.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your BMW X1 B48 F48, the exhaust costs €2,190 in stainless steel and €2,690 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    2 190 €

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

The safe bet: strong, corrosion-proof, with a full, rounded sound. The best value for money.

    Titanium

    2 690 €

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

It makes the exhaust around 40% lighter for the same design. Its note is more metallic and clearer higher up the rev range, and its finish ranges from brushed to blued.

No worries on durability: 304 stainless steel shrugs off winter road salt and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your BMW X1 B48 F48.

    ROG remote

ROG remote for opening and closing the valves

A discreet control unit in the boot and a two-button remote: you open and close whenever you like, independently of the drive modes. For fitting, we support you by phone or by email.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

For vehicles fitted with factory valves: the exhaust connects to their control and the drive modes stay in charge, with no extra control unit.

At 130 km/h, many sports exhausts drone. Here, with the valves closed, the exhaust flows through the silencer and stays composed when cruising; open, it makes itself heard when you choose. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your BMW X1 B48 F48, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the X1 F48

The B48 has a deep, even tone, with a hint of roughness when the turbo starts to push. In the X1, the factory exhaust reduces it to a faint hum, quickly drowned out by tyre and wind noise.

With the ROG exhaust and the valves open, the start-up gains presence and every acceleration comes with a round, assertive note, without aggression. With the valves closed, the X1 becomes the discreet everyday SUV again, for family trips and long distances.
