BMW M5 E60: unleashing the S85 V10, the exhaust guide

The M5 E60 is the only BMW M5 powered by a naturally aspirated V10: 5.0 litres, 507 hp and more than 8,000 rpm. An engine of this calibre deserves better than a factory exhaust that smothers its voice. This guide explains how to configure your ROG exhaust: material, valves, tips, fitting, and what each choice really changes.

The S85 V10: the naturally aspirated engine that made the M5 E60 a legend

Introduced in 2004, the S85 is a 5.0-litre V10 without forced induction, fed by ten individual throttle bodies. It produces 507 hp at 7,750 rpm and 520 Nm, and revs all the way to 8,250 rpm. BMW designed it when the brand was building Formula 1 engines, and you can tell: the power arrives right at the top of the rev counter.

On an engine of this type, the exhaust matters as much for the enjoyment as for the breathing. The factory exhaust, heavy and loaded with silencers, filters out exactly what gives the S85 its character: the climb through the revs. The ROG exhaust gives it back its voice with the valves open, without taking anything away from its grand touring comfort with the valves closed.

What makes up the exhaust on your BMW M5 E60

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

How the exhaust system is laid out From left to right: the engine, then the ROG cat-back with its valved silencer and tips.ROG cat-back: the complete exhaustS85
Valves closed: the gases pass through the silencer chambers and the car stays composed.Valves open: the gases take the direct route and the engine speaks freely.Schematic only; the actual routing depends on the vehicle.

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under your BMW M5 E60, all the way to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. This is where our research and development is focused, and it is what shapes the sound. It fits without touching the engine or the ECU.

Your BMW M5 E60 in figures

On a modern car, an exhaust system first changes the voice, the breathing and the weight at the rear. Power, on the other hand, comes from an ECU remap.

Power

Factory507 hp
Stage 2564 hp

Torque

Factory520 Nm
Stage 2578 Nm

Our exhaust systems work perfectly with or without an ECU remap. On your BMW M5 E60, however, we recommend having it done at an approved tuning centre: it is what lets the engine reach its full potential.

On a naturally aspirated V10, an ECU remap mainly works on top-end reach and filling at high revs. The gains remain more modest than on a turbocharged engine, and the exhaust is their natural complement.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your BMW M5 E60, the exhaust costs €2,490 in stainless steel and €2,990 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    2 490 €

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

The benchmark for high-end exhausts: tough, corrosion-proof, with a full, rounded sound. The choice of most of our customers.

    Titanium

    2 990 €

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

Around 40% lighter than stainless steel for the same design, with a more metallic sound that turns crystal-clear at high revs. Its finish ranges from brushed to blued tints.

Over time, both hold up: 304 stainless steel stands up to winter salt and damp, and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your BMW M5 E60.

    ROG remote

ROG remote for opening and closing the valves

A small control unit fits in the boot. Two buttons, open and closed: the valves respond at any moment, whatever the drive mode. Simple to fit, and we stay on hand throughout the installation.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

If your vehicle is fitted with factory valves, the exhaust keeps their existing control. The drive modes decide, just as they did from the factory, with no added electronics.

On the motorway, with the valves closed, the gases pass through the silencer, designed for cruising: no drone at a steady speed. You open up when you feel like it, not when the motorway decides for you. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your BMW M5 E60, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the S85 V10

The S85 is unlike any other engine in the BMW range. Deep and round at idle, it changes register beyond 5,000 rpm and finishes on a high, almost racing note. It is this second voice that the factory exhaust smothers.

With the ROG exhaust and the valves open, the switch from one register to the other becomes clear-cut, and every climb through the revs can be heard from start to finish. With the valves closed, the M5 regains the discretion of a touring saloon.

What about the manufacturer's warranty on your BMW M5 E60? In Europe, a manufacturer cannot refuse warranty cover simply because a part from another brand has been fitted: it has to prove that the fault comes from that part. Our article on the manufacturer's warranty.

BMW M5 E60: your questions

How much power does an exhaust add on the BMW M5 E60?

As standard, the BMW M5 E60 produces 507 hp and 520 Nm. An exhaust system on its own mainly changes the sound, the breathing and the weight; power is gained with an ECU remap. With a Stage 2 build, the published figures reach 564 hp and 578 Nm.

Stainless steel or titanium: which material for the BMW M5 E60?

For the BMW M5 E60, the ROG exhaust costs €2,490 in stainless steel and €2,990 in titanium. 304 stainless steel is tough, rounded in tone and the most popular choice; titanium is around 40% lighter for the same design, with a more metallic sound at high revs.

Is the ROG exhaust loud all the time on the BMW M5 E60?

No. With the valves closed, the gases pass through the silencer and the sound stays comfortable. With the valves open, the engine speaks freely. You switch from one to the other at any moment, with the ROG remote or the factory control if your vehicle has it.

Can the BMW M5 E60 pass the French MOT with a ROG exhaust?

The ROG exhaust replaces the rear part of the exhaust, without touching the engine or the ECU. Present the car with the valves closed: it is the most discreet setting.

How is the ROG exhaust fitted on the BMW M5 E60?

No welding or cutting, using clamps and gaskets. Allow two hours on average for a well-equipped mechanic. The exhaust is built for your VIN, which guarantees compatibility before it ships.

What price and lead time for a ROG exhaust on the BMW M5 E60?

From €2,490 to €2,990 depending on the configuration. Allow 20 working days from order confirmation to delivery. Free delivery in Europe and a 3-year warranty.
