The BMW M5 E60 exhaust in detail.
The E60 M5 is the only M5 powered by a naturally aspirated V10. Unveiled in 2004, when BMW was supplying engines to Formula 1, the S85 displaces 5.0 litres, breathes through ten individual throttle bodies and delivers 507 hp at 7,750 rpm with 520 Nm, before revving on to 8,250 rpm. This page covers the saloon from 2005 to 2010; the E60,525i and 530i have their own page, as do the F10, F90 and G90 M5.
The S85 is like no other engine in the range: deep and round at idle, it changes register beyond 5,000 rpm and finishes on a high, almost racing note. It is this second voice that the heavy factory exhaust, loaded with silencers, smothers. With the valves open on the Rog cat-back, the transition from one register to the other becomes clear and every climb can be heard from end to end; with the valves closed, the M5 regains the discretion of a touring saloon.
A precious car, the M5 E60 undergoes no cutting: the system, bent to its VIN, connects with clamps and gaskets in about two hours, and the factory valve control is retained where it exists, with the Rog remote otherwise taking its place in the boot.
This page sells a cat-back only, with no front section option: the engine and ECU remain those of the M5, and the system works on the voice and the weight at the rear. For a saloon of this calibre, 304 stainless steel offers a full sound and great durability; titanium, around 40% lighter for the same design, gives a more crystalline tone at the V10’s high revs and comes in brushed, gold or purple.

Questions about the BMW M5 E60 5.0L exhaust.
Can the even rarer E61 M5 Touring take this system?
The estate does not appear on our page, which only describes the saloon; give us your E61’s VIN and we examine compatibility before starting any manufacturing.
Is there any point in remapping the S85 V10?
On a naturally aspirated engine, gains remain modest and mainly concern top-end reach: the page publishes 564 hp and 578 Nm at Stage 2; the cat-back, for its part, fits without any intervention on the ECU.
What approach should you take at vehicle inspection with a modified V10 M5?
With the valves closed, the V10 returns to a voice close to stock; this cat-back only replaces the rear section of the exhaust, with the rest of the factory system and the engine left exactly as BMW delivered them.
Why does the M5’s V10 change its voice beyond 5,000 rpm?
It is the signature of the S85, designed in BMW’s Formula 1 era: deep at idle, it switches to a high-pitched note at the top of the rev range, a register our system lets you hear with the valves open.
For the V10 of a collectible M5, stainless steel or titanium?
304 stainless steel gives a full sound and ages well; titanium is around 40% lighter for the same design and makes the V10’s note more crystalline at high revs.
BMW M5 E60 5.0L: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW M5 E60 5.0L: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.

BMW M5 E60: unleashing the S85 V10, the exhaust guide
The M5 E60 is the only BMW M5 powered by a naturally aspirated V10: 5.0 litres, 507 hp and more than 8,000 rpm. An engine of this calibre deserves better than a factory exhaust that smothers its voice. This guide...
