    A question about this exhaust?

    BMW5 Series E60 / E61

    The BMW 525i and 530i E60 / E61 exhaust in detail.

The 525i and 530i E60 saloons and E61 Tourings combine the large 5 Series with a naturally aspirated inline-six, in 2.5 and 3.0-litre form. According to the table on the page, the 525i produces 218 hp with 250 Nm, then 270 Nm after the facelift, and the 530i reaches 272 hp and 320 Nm at the end of its career; the guide cites the N52, a lightweight magnesium and aluminium block with Valvetronic. This page covers 2005 to 2009; the V10 M5 E60 has its own.

On a naturally aspirated engine, all the pleasure comes from climbing through the revs, and that is precisely what the factory exhaust crushes in favour of a quiet cabin. Yet the smooth, even note at idle should turn metallic and furious at high revs. With the valves open, our cat-back lets every climb unfold the way it should sound, from the round bass to the top of the rev counter; with the valves closed, the E60 remains the hushed cruiser appreciated on the motorway.

Under this large saloon, installation is a morning’s work: clamps, gaskets, not a single weld, an exhaust bent to match the VIN, and valves controlled by the factory control where it exists, and by the Rog remote otherwise.

For once, the “Manifold” option lives up to its name: the page sells the manifolds, which collect the gases as they leave the cylinders and incorporate the factory catalytic converter. Their design has a real influence on the cylinder filling of a non-turbo six-cylinder, for a real but modest gain, 3 to 8% once the 5 Series is remapped. Chosen in 200-cell form, they keep the emissions control of an everyday cruiser, in 100-cell form they are accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules, and the decat version is reserved for track use. The cat-back follows in understated 304 stainless steel, or in titanium around 40% lighter.

    Questions about the BMW 525i / 530i E60 / E61 2.5L / 3.0L exhaust.

Can the E61 Touring take the E60 saloon system?

Yes. The E60 saloon and the E61 Touring take the same Rog system, built to your VIN, tips included, and fitted with clamps and gaskets. For a 2010 car, outside the years covered by this page, the VIN also lets us check the model year before manufacturing.

Does a naturally aspirated 525i or 530i benefit from an ECU remap?

Modestly: the page publishes Stage 2 figures of 250 hp and 294 Nm for the 525i with 218 hp and 250 Nm, 276 hp and 338 Nm for the 270 Nm version, and 299 hp and 357 Nm for the 272 hp 530i; the cat-back alone does not need it.

    BMW 525i / 530i E60 2.5L / 3.0L with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?

With factory or 200-cell catalysed manifolds and the valves closed, the saloon keeps its emissions control and a voice close to stock; in 100-cell form, it is accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules, and the decat version is reserved for track use.

Are manifolds useful on a naturally aspirated six-cylinder?

More than on a turbo: their geometry affects cylinder filling at high revs, for a gain of 3 to 8% once the car is remapped; without an ECU remap, it is mainly the voice that grows richer.

A large E60 saloon that is noisy on the motorway: is that a risk?

No: with the valves closed, the gases run through the silencer and the E60 keeps its grand-touring comfort at a steady speed; the valves only open at your request.

    BMW 525i / 530i E60 / E61 2.5L / 3.0L: Does a valved exhaust system drone?

No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.

    BMW 525i / 530i E60 / E61 2.5L / 3.0L: straight pipe or resonator?

On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.

    BMW 525i / 530i E60 / E61: the song of the N52 straight-six, the exhaust system guide

The E60 525i and 530i pair BMW's large saloon with a naturally aspirated inline-six, the N52, whose appeal lies entirely in how it climbs through the revs. The factory exhaust, tuned for silence, flattens precisely what makes it so charming....
