Configuration
BMW Z4 E89 2.5L / 3.0L Valved Exhaust System (2009-2011)
Valves
Operated by remote control, factory-paired.
Estimated at 0.50 m from the outlet, 45°, 2,000 rpm with a warm engine. Allow ± 2 dB depending on the engine and measuring point. A 3 dB difference is audible in a direct comparison; 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.

The BMW Z4 E89 2.5L and 3.0L exhaust in detail.
A rear-wheel-drive roadster with a retractable hard top, the Z4 E89 from 2009 to 2011 received the N52, a naturally aspirated inline-six, in sDrive23i and sDrive30i form: 204 hp and 250 Nm as a 2.5-litre, 258 hp and 300 Nm as a 3.0-litre, with a linear response and a real appetite for revs. According to the guide, the twin-turbo Z4 E89 3.0T shares the same system, but keeps its own page; the Z4 2.0T has its own.
The N52 has the clear voice of naturally aspirated inline-sixes, rising through the revs with an increasingly high-pitched, metallic note. With no turbo to filter it, everything goes through the exhaust, and the factory system flattens this voice even with the roof open, exactly when you would expect to hear the engine. With the valves open, our cat-back makes every roof-down drive livelier, with crystal-clear climbs through the revs; with the valves closed, the roadster regains a calmer sound for the motorway.
About two hours, with no welding, are enough to connect a system bent to your VIN with clamps and gaskets, with factory valve control or the Rog remote.
On this naturally aspirated engine, the “Manifold” option sells the front section, which the guide describes as the pipes placed just after the manifolds, with the catalytic converter; their geometry matters, but the gain remains modest, 3 to 8% with an ECU remap. The naturally aspirated roadster keeps its emissions control with a 200-cell front section, the 100-cell one being accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country and the decat version reserved for track use; for the cat-back, 304 stainless steel and titanium, around 40% lighter, are offered.

Questions about the BMW Z4 E89 2.5L / 3.0L exhaust.
sDrive23i or sDrive30i: does the naturally aspirated Z4 E89 take the same exhaust?
Yes, the page covers both versions from 2009 to 2011, even though it does not name the badges; your VIN allows us to confirm yours.
Does a Z4’s N52 benefit from an ECU remap?
Its headroom is narrow, as on any naturally aspirated engine, and the page publishes no Stage 2 figure; with the front section, the gain remains modest, 3 to 8%, and the cat-back alone needs no map at all.
BMW Z4 E89 2.5L / 3.0L with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
Roof up and valves closed, the N52 inline-six regains its 2009 discretion, while its factory or 200-cell front section still treats the exhaust gases; in 100-cell form, acceptance depends on the vehicle and your country’s rules, and the decat version is reserved for track use.
Why change the front section of a Z4 E89 with the N52 engine?
On an N52, the geometry of the pipes affects cylinder filling at high revs, for a modest gain of 3 to 8% once remapped; without an ECU remap, it is mainly the voice that gets richer.
With the roof open, will the Z4 E89 become tiring on the motorway?
No: with the valves closed, the gases run through the silencer and the roadster remains pleasant when cruising; you open up on the winding road of your choice.
BMW Z4 E89 2.5L / 3.0L: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW Z4 E89 2.5L / 3.0L: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.

BMW Z4 E89: the straight-six roadster, naturally aspirated or biturbo, the exhaust system guide
The Z4 E89, a roadster with a retractable hard top, received two families of straight-six: the naturally aspirated N52, 204 hp in 2.5 form, and the 3.0-litre biturbo N54, with up to 340 hp. Two very different voices, which the...
