BMW M6 E63 V10: the grand tourer with a racing heart, the exhaust system guide

The M6 E63 is a grand touring coupé that shares an extraordinary engine with the M5 of the same era: a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V10 with 507 hp. Its character is uncompromising and its voice rare, but the factory exhaust keeps it under lock and key. This guide helps you configure the ROG valved exhaust that suits your M6, explaining what each option changes: material, tips, valves and fitting.

The 5.0-litre V10: a thoroughbred engine in a GT

The M6 E63 gets a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V10, an engine designed by the M division to rev very high, with individual throttle bodies. It produces 507 hp and 520 Nm. Torque is not its main argument: this V10 lives at high revs, and its power has to be earned by reaching for the top of the rev counter, which gives the driving a character rare in a GT.

On a naturally aspirated engine of this calibre, the exhaust is an integral part of the experience: the voice accompanies the climb through the revs and tells you what the engine is doing. The factory exhaust, massive and heavily filtered, holds back most of it. The ROG valved exhaust gives you that voice back whenever you want it, while preserving grand touring comfort when the valves stay closed, and without touching the ECU.

What makes up the exhaust on your BMW M6 E63 V10

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

How the exhaust system is laid out From left to right: the engine, then the ROG cat-back with its valved silencer and tips.ROG cat-back: the complete exhaustEngine
Valves closed: the gases take the long way through the silencer and the cabin stays calm.Valves open: no more detour, the sound comes out unfiltered.Schematic only; the actual routing depends on the vehicle.

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under your BMW M6 E63 V10, all the way to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. Routing, silencer, valves: this is where the sound is shaped. The engine and the ECU stay as they left the factory.

Your BMW M6 E63 V10 in figures

What an exhaust changes straight away is the sound, the engine's breathing and the weight at the rear. For more power, add an ECU remap.

Power

Stage 2564 hp

Torque

Factory520 Nm
Stage 2578 Nm

With or without an ECU remap, the exhaust fits and works. But it is an ECU remap at an approved tuning centre that truly unlocks your BMW M6 E63 V10, and that is what we recommend.

On a naturally aspirated V10, remapping does not have forced induction as a lever: it works on ignition timing and cylinder filling, for more modest gains than on a turbocharged engine. The ROG exhaust is its logical complement, since it lets you hear the engine at work at high revs.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your BMW M6 E63 V10, the exhaust costs €2,490 in stainless steel and €2,990 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    2 490 €

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

Durable, corrosion-resistant, with a rounded, full sound: the most popular option.

    Titanium

    2 990 €

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

For the same design, it weighs around 40% less than stainless steel. A more metallic note at high revs and a look all of its own, from brushed to blued.

Both materials age well: 304 stainless steel copes with winter and salt, and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your BMW M6 E63 V10.

    ROG remote

ROG remote for opening and closing the valves

The simplest solution: a control unit in the boot and a remote, open or closed at the press of a button, whatever mode you are in. A question while fitting? We will get back to you.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

Does your vehicle have factory valves? The exhaust keeps their existing control: the drive modes operate the valves, as before, with no added electronics.

On a long journey, what matters is the absence of drone at a steady speed. With the valves closed, the exhaust keeps the cabin calm; the show is still there whenever you ask for it. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your BMW M6 E63 V10, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the M6's V10

The M6's V10 has a voice all its own: a gravelly rumble at low revs that turns into a metallic howl as the needle climbs. It is a rare sound in a road car, and the factory exhaust holds it back, letting through only a softened, almost timid version of what the engine produces.

With the valves open, the ROG exhaust lets the V10 show its full range, from a muted bass at idle to the high-pitched scream at high revs, with a build-up you hear unfiltered. With the valves closed, the M6 becomes once again a civilised grand touring coupé, ready for long distances.

BMW M6 E63 V10: your questions

How much power does an exhaust add on the BMW M6 E63 V10?

As standard, the BMW M6 E63 V10 produces 507 hp and 520 Nm. Without a remap, the exhaust transforms the voice and lightens the rear; it is the ECU remap that increases power. With a Stage 2 build, the published figures reach 564 hp and 578 Nm.

Stainless steel or titanium: which material for the BMW M6 E63 V10?

For the BMW M6 E63 V10, the ROG exhaust costs €2,490 in stainless steel and €2,990 in titanium. Choose stainless steel for value for money and a rounded sound, titanium to save around 40% in weight and get a clearer tone.

Is the ROG exhaust loud all the time on the BMW M6 E63 V10?

Never against your will: with the valves closed, the BMW M6 E63 V10 keeps a composed sound; with the valves open, it speaks freely, at the press of a button.
