Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230 V8: the V8 with the wind in your hair, the exhaust system guide
A coupé or a convertible depending on the position of its folding hard top, the SL500 R230 combines the comfort of a limousine with the pleasure of open-air driving. Its 388 hp 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 is the ideal companion for that programme, as long as you can hear it. Yet the factory exhaust lets it say almost nothing. This guide helps you put together your ROG exhaust, material, valves and fitting, so that every roof-down drive has its soundtrack.

The naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V8: the smooth strength of the SL500 R230
In the 2008 to 2011 model years, the SL500 R230 gets a 5.5-litre naturally aspirated V8. It produces 388 hp and 530 Nm, with generous torque available across a wide band, which lets you drive quickly without ever stressing the mechanicals. This engine favours flexibility and smoothness, but it can also stretch its legs when asked, with the direct response typical of large engines without a turbo.
With the roof folded, nothing stands between your ears and what comes out of the exhaust. Yet the SL500's factory exhaust was tuned to preserve calm on board and lets only a distant murmur through. The ROG valved exhaust takes its place without touching the engine or the ECU. With the valves closed, you get back the factory serenity; with the valves open, the V8 finally accompanies every drive.
What makes up the exhaust on your Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230 V8
Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.
The cat-back is the complete exhaust system
It is everything you can see under the chassis of your Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230 V8, right through to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. This is the part where most of our research and development goes, the part that shapes the sound, and it fits without touching the engine or the ECU.
The figures for your Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230 V8
An exhaust system is judged first by ear and on the scales. The extra horsepower comes from an ECU remap.
Power
Torque
Published factory and Stage 2 figures.
The ROG exhaust works with or without an ECU remap. To get the full potential out of your Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230 V8, we advise taking it to an approved tuning centre for a remap afterwards.
On a naturally aspirated V8 like the SL500's, an ECU remap does not transform the engine: it refines response and flexibility, for gains more modest than with a turbo. The ROG exhaust is the most noticeable complement, giving this V8 the voice its character calls for.
Configuring your exhaust, step by step
3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.
-
Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium
For your Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230 V8, the exhaust costs €2,190 in stainless steel and €2,690 in titanium.
304 stainless steel
2 190 €
- Weight
- Baseline
- Sound
- Full and rounded
The safe bet: strong, corrosion-proof, with a full, rounded sound. The best value for money.
Titanium
2 690 €
- Weight
- Around 40% lighter
- Sound
- Metallic, crystal-clear
It makes the exhaust around 40% lighter for the same design. Its note is more metallic and clearer higher up the rev range, and its finish ranges from brushed to blued.
No worries on durability: 304 stainless steel shrugs off winter road salt and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.
-
Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control
Two ways to control the valves on your Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230 V8.
ROG remote

A discreet control unit in the boot and a two-button remote: you open and close whenever you like, independently of the drive modes. For fitting, we support you by phone or by email.
Factory control
- Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
- Controlled by the drive modes
For vehicles fitted with factory valves: the exhaust connects to their control and the drive modes stay in charge, with no extra control unit.
At 130 km/h, many sports exhausts drone. Here, with the valves closed, the exhaust flows through the silencer and stays composed when cruising; open, it makes itself heard when you choose. More about exhaust drone.

Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature
Match the tips to the style of your Mercedes-Benz SL500 R230 V8, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.
- Stainless steel

The ROG sound signature on the SL500's V8
The 5.5-litre V8 has a deep, rounded voice without aggression, with a steady rumble that thickens as you accelerate. In the SL500, the factory exhaust confines it to a murmur: with the roof open, you hear the wind more than the eight-cylinder working away in front of you.
With the valves open, the ROG exhaust gives the V8 a broad, warm presence that you can savour on a leisurely drive or when accelerating on a clear road. With the valves closed, the SL500 keeps its temperament as a hushed grand tourer, for the motorway or a drive through a seaside resort.
