Valved Exhaust System for BMW M3 E46 L6 3.2L (2004-2006)
Configuration
BMW M3 E46 L6 3.2L Valved Exhaust System (2004-2006)
Valves
Operated by remote control, factory-paired.
Estimated at 0.50 m from the outlet, 45°, 2,000 rpm with a warm engine. Allow ± 2 dB depending on the engine and measuring point. A 3 dB difference is audible in a direct comparison; 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.
Configuration guide
Sound intensity with the valves open, on a scale of 0 to 10.
| Configuration | Intensity |
|---|---|
| Decat manifolds + Rog cat-back | 10/10 |
| 100-cell sports catalytic converter + Rog cat-back | 9/10 |
| 200-cell sports catalytic converter + Rog cat-back | 8/10 |
| Rog cat-back only, factory catalytic converter retained | 7/10 |
| Factory exhaust, for comparison | 3/10 |

The BMW M3 E46 exhaust in detail.
The E46 M3 holds a special place in BMW M history. Its S54 is a 3.2-litre naturally aspirated inline-six, fed by six individual throttle bodies and fitted with variable timing on both camshafts: 343 hp and 365 Nm, earned by chasing the red line. The E46 M3s from the 2004 to 2006 model years are the ones this page covers.
With no turbo to filter the sound, the exhaust is the only intermediary between the S54 and you. This engine has one of BMW’s most recognizable voices: a hoarse rumble at idle, then a metallic song that sharpens with the revs, carried by the induction roar of the individual throttle bodies. With the valves open, our valved cat-back turns it into a clean crescendo up to the howl at the end of each gear; with the valves closed, the M3 regains a more restrained presence for town or touring.
Nothing to weld on this now precious body: clamps, gaskets and about two hours are enough, for a system made to your VIN, with the two-button Rog remote if your M3 has no factory valves. The V8 M3 E9x and the twin-turbo six-cylinder F80 have their own pages.
For once, the “Manifold” label describes the part exactly: on the S54, it is the manifolds, with the integrated catalytic converter, that collect the gases from each cylinder, and their geometry has a real influence on cylinder filling. With an ECU remap, the gain remains real but modest, around 3 to 8%. Chosen in 200-cell form, they leave the emissions control of a road-driven M3 intact, in 100-cell form they are accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules, and the decat version is reserved for track use. The cat-back follows in 304 stainless steel, true to the car’s spirit, or in titanium around 40% lighter, available in brushed, gold or purple.

Questions about the BMW M3 E46 L6 3.2L exhaust.
Can a pre-2004 M3 E46 take this exhaust?
The page covers the 2004 to 2006 model years and earlier ones are not documented; for an older E46 M3, coupé or convertible, send us the VIN and we check before manufacturing.
Does remapping an S54 make sense?
On such a polished naturally aspirated engine, the map refines more than it transforms: the published Stage 2 figures for the M3 E46 are 383 hp and 410 Nm, a gain felt mainly at the top end, and the cat-back alone does without it.
BMW M3 E46 L6 3.2L with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
With 200-cell catalyzed manifolds, or the factory ones, the S54 keeps cleaning its emissions, and once the valves are closed its voice returns close to that of 2004; 100-cell manifolds are accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules, and the decat version is reserved for track use.
Manifolds on the S54 inline-six: what is the benefit?
On this naturally aspirated engine, more so than on a turbo, as geometry affects cylinder filling at high revs; count on a modest gain, 3 to 8% with an ECU remap, and a richer sound, whereas without an ECU remap only the voice changes.
For an M3 E46 kept as a collector’s car, stainless steel or titanium?
304 stainless steel keeps a round sound and ages well on a car you plan to keep; titanium lightens the system by around 40% for the same design and gives the S54 a more crystalline note at high revs.
Does the M3 E46 convertible take the same system as the coupé?
Yes. Coupé and convertible share the E46 code, the S54 six-cylinder and the same Rog system, fitted with clamps and gaskets. Your VIN is only used to confirm the version and model year before manufacturing.
BMW M3 E46 L6 3.2L: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear muffler and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the highway.
BMW M3 E46 L6 3.2L: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
