Dodge Charger V8 6.4: the big naturally aspirated HEMI, the exhaust system guide

From 2012 to 2019, the Charger offered the biggest naturally aspirated HEMI in its range: a 6.4-litre V8, 477 hp until 2014, then 492 hp from 2015 to 2019. A big rear-wheel-drive saloon built to rumble, but whose factory exhaust decides what you hear, which is to say not much. The same ROG valved exhaust fits both periods; here you will find, step by step, everything you need to configure it.

The 6.4-litre HEMI: the quiet strength of the Charger V8

The 6.4 HEMI is a naturally aspirated V8 with a single camshaft in the block and pushrod-operated valves, plus hemispherical combustion chambers that give it its name. In the 2012 to 2014 Charger it produces 477 hp and 637 Nm; from 2015 to 2019, 492 hp and 644 Nm. Its strength comes from its displacement: torque everywhere and an instant response to the throttle.

Before and after the facelift, the Charger keeps the same engine and the same rear-wheel-drive layout, hence one ROG exhaust common to both periods. On a V8 of this calibre, the exhaust shapes much of the character, and the factory system chooses to round it off. The ROG exhaust hands control back to you: the HEMI in full voice with the valves open, the serenity of a large saloon with them closed.

What makes up the exhaust on your Dodge Charger V8

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

How the exhaust system is laid out From left to right: the engine, then the ROG cat-back with its valved silencer and tips.ROG cat-back: the complete exhaustEngine

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under the chassis of your Dodge Charger V8, right through to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. This is where our research and development is focused, and it is what shapes the sound. It fits without touching the engine or the ECU.

The figures for your Dodge Charger V8

On a modern car, an exhaust system first changes the voice, the breathing and the weight at the rear. Power, on the other hand, comes from an ECU remap.

Our exhaust systems work perfectly with or without an ECU remap. On your Dodge Charger V8, however, we recommend having one done at an approved tuning centre: that is what lets the engine reach its full potential.

Without forced induction, the 6.4 HEMI does not have the reserves of a turbo engine: a Stage 2 remap works on its mapping, with a result that depends on the condition of the car and on the overall build. The ROG exhaust takes no credit for this gain; it provides the soundtrack to it.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your Dodge Charger V8, the exhaust costs €2,490 in stainless steel and €2,990 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    €2,490

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

The benchmark for high-end exhausts: tough, corrosion-proof, with a full, rounded sound. The choice of most of our customers.

    Titanium

    €2,990

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

Around 40% lighter than stainless steel for the same design, with a more metallic sound that turns crystal-clear at high revs. Its finish ranges from brushed to blued tints.

Over time, both hold up: 304 stainless steel stands up to winter salt and damp, and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your Dodge Charger V8.

    ROG remote

ROG remote for opening and closing the valves

A small control unit fits in the boot. Two buttons, open and closed: the valves respond at any moment, whatever the drive mode. Simple to fit, and we stay on hand throughout the installation.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

If your vehicle is fitted with factory valves, the exhaust keeps their existing control. The drive modes decide, just as they did from the factory, with no added electronics.

On the motorway, with the valves closed, the gases pass through the silencer, designed for cruising: no drone at a steady speed. You open up when you feel like it, not when the motorway decides for you. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your Dodge Charger V8, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the Charger's 6.4 HEMI

The 6.4 HEMI has a heavy voice to match its displacement: a deep, lumpy rumble at idle that becomes a continuous roar under full load. Behind the factory exhaust, the Charger delivers only a polite version of it, where you can sense the potential without ever really hearing it.

With the valves open, the ROG exhaust unleashes the HEMI's beat from start-up, then a full roar every time you accelerate, with downshifts that crack. With the valves closed, your Charger goes back to being a big, relaxed saloon, for town and motorway alike.

What about the manufacturer's warranty on your Dodge Charger V8? In Europe, a manufacturer cannot refuse warranty cover simply because a part from another brand has been fitted: it has to prove that the fault comes from that part. Our article on the manufacturer's warranty.

Dodge Charger V8: your questions

How much power does an exhaust system add to the Dodge Charger V8?

From the factory, the Dodge Charger V8 (2012-2014) produces 477 hp; the Dodge Charger V8 (2015-2019) produces 492 hp. An exhaust system on its own mainly changes the sound, the breathing and the weight; power is gained with an ECU remap. The published Stage 2 figures for each model are shown in the figures table.

Stainless steel or titanium: which material for the Dodge Charger V8?

For the Dodge Charger V8, the ROG exhaust costs €2,490 in stainless steel and €2,990 in titanium. 304 stainless steel is tough, rounded in tone and the most popular choice; titanium is around 40% lighter for the same design, with a more metallic sound at high revs.

Is the ROG exhaust on the Dodge Charger V8 loud all the time?

No. With the valves closed, the gases pass through the silencer and the sound stays comfortable. With the valves open, the engine speaks freely. You switch from one to the other at any moment, with the ROG remote or the factory control if your vehicle has it.

Will a ROG exhaust pass vehicle inspection on the Dodge Charger V8?

The ROG exhaust replaces the rear part of the exhaust, without touching the engine or the ECU. Present the car with the valves closed: it is the most discreet setting.

How is the ROG exhaust fitted to the Dodge Charger V8?

No welding or cutting, using clamps and gaskets. Allow two hours on average for a well-equipped mechanic. The exhaust is built for your VIN, which guarantees compatibility before it ships.

What does a ROG exhaust for the Dodge Charger V8 cost, and how long does it take?

From €2,490 to €2,990 depending on the configuration. Allow 20 working days from order confirmation to delivery. Free delivery and a 3-year warranty.
