Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster: the full VQ sound, the complete guide

The 350Z is already a cult car: the rebirth of the Z line, the gravelly VQ35 and a place of honor in JDM culture. Its value is rising again, and its factory exhaust has never done justice to its tone: ours does. This guide sets out, for your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster, what each choice changes: material, front section, sound, valves and fitting.

The Nissan V6: the ultimate JDM sound

The V6 in your 350Z belongs to the VQ family, voted among the world's best engines for years running: naturally aspirated, ferocious and high-revving, with a gravelly tone that has become legendary in the JDM scene. The factory exhaust delivers only a fraction of that character.

The Rog exhaust delivers the rest: the raspy, present VQ timbre, the furious climb, the crackles on the overrun. It is the soundtrack of Japanese car culture, adjustable with the valves.

What makes up the exhaust on your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster

An exhaust system is best understood in two parts. Here is what each one does, and what Rog replaces.

How the exhaust system is laid out From left to right: the engine, the front section, then the Rog cat-back with its valved muffler and tips.Front sectionRog cat-back: the complete exhaustEngine
Valves closed: the gases pass through the muffler chambers and the car stays composed.Valves open: the gases take the direct route and the engine speaks freely.Schematic only; the actual routing depends on the vehicle.

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under the chassis of your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster, from the outlet of the front section to the tips: pipes, muffler, valves. This is where our research and development is focused, and it is what shapes the sound. On its own, it changes the character of the car.

The front section, where the catalytic converter sits

On your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster, that means the manifolds, which collect the gases as they leave the cylinders. The factory catalytic converter is built into them: the second restriction in the exhaust, after the muffler. Replacing this part is optional: it frees up the flow, and an ECU remap is what turns that into power.

The figures for your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster

On a modern car, an exhaust system first changes the voice, the breathing and the weight at the rear. Power, on the other hand, comes from an ECU remap.

Factory363 Nm

Our exhaust systems work perfectly with or without an ECU remap. On your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster, however, we recommend having one done at an approved tuning center: that is what lets the engine reach its full potential.

Let's be honest: on the naturally aspirated V6, the exhaust brings a moderate gain and a transformed character, and that is the goal. An ECU remap at an approved tuning center then fine-tunes the engine management to exploit the freed-up breathing.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

4 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 4: Material: stainless steel or titanium

Titanium costs more than stainless steel; the price of each version is shown on the product page, in your currency.

    304 stainless steel

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

The benchmark for high-end exhausts: tough, corrosion-proof, with a full, rounded sound. The choice of most of our customers.

    Titanium

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

Around 40% lighter than stainless steel for the same design, with a more metallic sound that turns crystal-clear at high revs. Its finish ranges from brushed to blued tints.

Over time, both hold up: 304 stainless steel stands up to winter salt and damp, and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 4: Front section: manifolds and catalytic converter

Optional: the manifolds on your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster, with the catalytic converter. Sound intensity is rated on our scale of 0 to 10, valves open; the factory exhaust scores 3.

    Cat-back only

    Included

    7/10

    Factory emissions control

The factory catalytic converter stays in place. The starting point and, for many of our customers, more than enough.

    200-cell sports catalytic converter

    8/10

    Road use and inspection

Emissions control is still very much there, and flow improves noticeably. The choice for everyday driving.

    100-cell sports catalytic converter

    9/10

    Inspection: depends on local rules

Half as many cells: flow comes close to a decat and the sound gains real aggression at high revs.

    Decat

    10/10

    Track use

No emissions control: maximum flow, raw sound, the sharpest revving.

Sound intensity, on a scale of 0 to 10

    1. 10/10Decat manifolds + Rog cat-back
    2. 9/10100-cell sports catalytic converter + Rog cat-back
    3. 8/10200-cell sports catalytic converter + Rog cat-back
    4. 7/10Rog cat-back only, factory catalytic converter retained
    5. 3/10Factory exhaust, for comparison

Valves open. With the valves closed, every configuration becomes discreet again.

What about the engine warning light? With a sports cat, it can come on with some engines: the sensor placed after the catalytic converter measures a different level of emissions control from the original. It is not a mechanical failure, but a warning light should never be masked or cleared without dealing with its cause: the right answer is a catalytic converter suited to the engine, with a map by a tuner who takes it into account. The decat version, for track use only, almost always triggers it. If this happens to you, write to us and we will point you in the right direction. Passing vehicle inspection with a sports exhaust.

  3. Step 3 of 4: Valves: Rog remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster.

    Rog remote

Rog remote for opening and closing the valves

A small control unit fits in the trunk. Two buttons, open and closed: the valves respond at any moment, whatever the drive mode. Simple to fit, and we stay on hand throughout the installation.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

If your vehicle is fitted with factory valves, the exhaust keeps their existing control. The drive modes decide, just as they did from the factory, with no added electronics.

On the highway, with the valves closed, the gases pass through the muffler, designed for cruising: no drone at a steady speed. You open up when you feel like it, not when the highway decides for you. More about exhaust drone.

  4. Step 4 of 4: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The Rog sound signature on the V6

Our exhaust delivers the full VQ timbre: raspy, furious and climbing high with that cult JDM signature with the valves open, crackles on the overrun included. With the valves closed, the Z turns discreet again. Japanese car culture, at the touch of a remote.

On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty.

What about the manufacturer's warranty on your Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster? In Europe, a manufacturer cannot refuse warranty cover simply because a part from another brand has been fitted: it has to prove that the fault comes from that part. Our article on the manufacturer's warranty.

Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster: your questions

How much power does an exhaust system add to the Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster?

From the factory, the Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster produces 280 hp and 363 Nm. An exhaust system on its own mainly changes the sound, the breathing and the weight; power is gained with an ECU remap. On a naturally aspirated engine, an ECU remap only brings a modest gain: what really changes is the sound and the response.

Stainless steel or titanium: which material for the Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster?

The Rog exhaust comes in stainless steel and titanium, at the price shown on the product page in your currency. 304 stainless steel is tough, rounded in tone and the most popular choice; titanium is around 40% lighter for the same design, with a more metallic sound at high revs.

Do you need to replace the catalytic converter on the Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster?

No. On the Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster, the cat-back alone carries the valves and already transforms the sound. Replacing the manifolds is an option for going further: with a 200-cell sports catalytic converter for the road, 100-cell or decat for more radical use, with an ECU remap to turn it into power.

Will a Rog exhaust pass vehicle inspection on the Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster?

With the cat-back only or the 200-cell sports catalytic converter, emissions control is retained: present the car with the valves closed. The 100-cell brings more sound and flow, and whether it is accepted at the emissions test depends on the car and local rules; the decat version is intended for track use.

How is the Rog exhaust fitted to the Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster?

No welding or cutting, using clamps and gaskets. Allow two hours on average for a well-equipped mechanic. The exhaust is built for your VIN, which guarantees compatibility before it ships.

What does a Rog exhaust for the Nissan 350Z / 350Z Roadster cost, and how long does it take?

The price depends on the configuration and is shown on the product page, in your currency. Allow 20 working days from order confirmation to delivery. Free delivery and a 3-year warranty.
