The short answer. For a BMW M2 G87, the most complete valved exhaust is a cat-back that also replaces the mid-pipe and lets you choose the sound: the Rog system is made to order from your M2's VIN, in 304 stainless steel or titanium, with three designs (Standard, Equal Length, Equal Length + Z-pipe), from €2,890 with the remote included. Valves closed, the M2 stays close to its stock sound; valves open, the S58 finally finds its voice.

The M2 G87 gets the M3's S58, a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six with 460 hp and 550 Nm, raised to 480 hp on more recent cars. Its 22.3 kg factory system, with a particulate filter, makes it very quiet: on our 0 to 10 scale, valves open, it sits at 3. Here are the four options to give it its voice back, and what each one brings.

On the M2, the cat-back is what changes the character most: a rear silencer on its own leaves the factory mid-pipe filtering the sound and imposes the voice chosen by its manufacturer. The Rog system replaces the whole rear section and lets you set the tone of the S58, then the volume on every drive with the valves.

How to choose.

  • The sound. On the Rog system, you choose the design: Standard for the raw grain of the twin-turbo, Equal Length for a higher, smoother note, Equal Length + Z-pipe for the highest register (see what the Z-pipe changes). The resonator, at the same price, gives a rounder voice.
  • The material. Titanium weighs about 40% less than stainless steel for the same design, a real gain over the rear axle of a rear-wheel-drive car. 304 stainless steel gives a fuller note.
  • What the system replaces. The more pipework a system replaces, the more voice and weight you gain. The downpipe only adds power with an ECU remap.
  • Road use and inspections. Valves closed, a Rog system stays close to the stock sound, and the cat-back alone or the 200-cell downpipe keep a catalytic converter.

Frequently asked questions.

What is the best valved exhaust for a BMW M2 G87?
The one that gives you the sound you want. The Rog system is a valved cat-back made from your VIN: you choose the design (Standard, Equal Length, Equal Length + Z-pipe), the material and the character, and you keep a discreet M2 with the valves closed, remote included.

Rear silencer or cat-back: what is the difference on the M2 G87?
A rear silencer only replaces the last part of the system: the factory mid-pipe stays in place and keeps filtering the sound. A cat-back replaces everything after the front section, mid-pipe included, which gives far more freedom over the sound. The Rog system is a cat-back.

Does the M2 G87 need an ECU remap?
Not for a cat-back. A remap matters if you also change the downpipe: that is what turns the freer flow into power.

Does the Rog system keep the factory valve control?
Yes: it uses the factory control, and the drive modes open the valves as before. You can also choose the Rog remote, included in the price, which opens and closes the valves whatever the mode.

Is a valved exhaust on an M2 G87 legal for the road and the MOT?
Rog exhausts carry no type approval. At a UK MOT, noise is judged by ear and the tester checks the factory emissions equipment: valves closed, the M2 sounds close to stock, and the cat-back alone or the 200-cell downpipe keep a catalytic converter. Elsewhere, the rules and the decision belong to your country's inspection (see the links above); the catless version is for track use only.
