Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 V8 biturbo: the V8 in the open air, the exhaust guide

The Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 combines two pleasures: that of a roadster with a retractable hard top and that of a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8, delivering 537 hp and 800 Nm as standard. With the roof down, you are as close to the engine as you can get, but the factory exhaust was designed to mask its sound. From material to tips, every choice for the ROG exhaust is explained here, to finally give the V8 its place in the experience.

The M157 twin-turbo V8: the commanding power of the SL63 R231

The M157 is a 5.5-litre V8 boosted by two turbos, fitted to the AMG 63 models of its generation. In the SL63 R231, it delivers 537 hp and 800 Nm of torque available across a very wide range, pushing the roadster along with disconcerting ease. Rear-wheel drive and the retractable roof make the SL63 a grand tourer capable of truly sporting acceleration.

On a roadster, you experience the exhaust more directly than in any saloon: with the roof down, it is the first thing you hear. The SL63's factory exhaust was calibrated for discretion, and it holds back the V8's expression. The ROG valved exhaust replaces it with a system you control, and lets you decide when the M157 makes itself heard.

What makes up the exhaust on your Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 V8 biturbo

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

How the exhaust system is laid out From left to right: the engine, then the ROG cat-back with its valved silencer and tips.ROG cat-back: the complete exhaustM157

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under your Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 V8 biturbo, all the way to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. Routing, silencer, valves: this is where the sound is shaped. The engine and the ECU stay as they left the factory.

Your Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 V8 biturbo in figures

What an exhaust changes straight away is the sound, the engine's breathing and the weight at the rear. For more power, add an ECU remap.

With or without an ECU remap, the exhaust fits and works. But it is an ECU remap at an approved tuning centre that truly unlocks your Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 V8 biturbo, and that is what we recommend.

With two turbos and generous displacement, the M157 keeps a reserve of power and torque that a Stage 2 remap can tap into, in the hands of a tuner who knows this engine well. The end result varies from one car to another. The ROG exhaust is a natural fit for this kind of project.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 V8 biturbo, the exhaust costs €3,390 in stainless steel and €4,140 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    3 390 €

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

Durable, corrosion-resistant, with a rounded, full sound: the most popular option.

    Titanium

    4 140 €

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

For the same design, it weighs around 40% less than stainless steel. A more metallic note at high revs and a look all of its own, from brushed to blued.

Both materials age well: 304 stainless steel copes with winter and salt, and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 V8 biturbo.

    ROG remote

ROG remote for opening and closing the valves

The simplest solution: a control unit in the boot and a remote, open or closed at the press of a button, whatever mode you are in. A question while fitting? We will get back to you.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

Does your vehicle have factory valves? The exhaust keeps their existing control: the drive modes operate the valves, as before, with no added electronics.

On a long journey, what matters is the absence of drone at a steady speed. With the valves closed, the exhaust keeps the cabin calm; the show is still there whenever you ask for it. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your Mercedes-AMG SL63 R231 V8 biturbo, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the M157 V8 of the SL63

The M157 has the deep, powerful voice of the great AMG V8s, with a rumble that rolls at idle and surges under acceleration. On the standard SL63, even with the roof down, this voice stays filtered, and you hear more of the wind than of the engine.

With the valves open, the ROG exhaust puts the V8 in the spotlight: every acceleration is enjoyed in the open air, every downshift gains depth. With the valves closed, the SL63 regains the discretion of a grand tourer, for long stints or late returns home.
