Mini John Cooper Works F56: the go-kart spirit set to music, the exhaust system guide

The John Cooper Works F56 takes the three-door Mini into sporting territory: a compact format, a lively chassis and a B48, a 231 hp, 320 Nm turbocharged four-cylinder. Behind the wheel, the go-kart spirit is very much there. To the ear, far less so: the factory exhaust smooths out the engine's character. With this guide, choose the ROG exhaust that will match the sound of your JCW to the way it drives.

The B48: the turbocharged four-cylinder that powers the John Cooper Works F56

The John Cooper Works F56 gets the B48, a two-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder from BMW's modular family. It produces 231 hp and 320 Nm, generous figures for such a compact car. Torque arrives early, the response is sharp, and the little Mini strings corners together with the agility that made its name.

On such a playful car, the sound is an integral part of the enjoyment. Yet the JCW's factory exhaust smooths out the B48's character and makes it almost tame. The ROG valved exhaust replaces it without touching the B48 or its ECU, and gives the four-cylinder a more candid, snarling voice in keeping with the car's behaviour, while retaining the factory discretion on demand.

What makes up the exhaust on your Mini John Cooper Works F56

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

How the exhaust system is laid out From left to right: the engine, then the ROG cat-back with its valved silencer and tips.ROG cat-back: the complete exhaustB48

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under your Mini John Cooper Works F56, all the way to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. This is where our research and development is focused, and it is what shapes the sound. It fits without touching the engine or the ECU.

Your Mini John Cooper Works F56 in figures

On a modern car, an exhaust system first changes the voice, the breathing and the weight at the rear. Power, on the other hand, comes from an ECU remap.

Power

Factory231 hp
Stage 2284 hp

Torque

Factory320 Nm
Stage 2389 Nm

Published factory and Stage 2 figures.

Our exhaust systems work perfectly with or without an ECU remap. On your Mini John Cooper Works F56, however, we recommend having it done at an approved tuning centre: it is what lets the engine reach its full potential.

The JCW's B48 takes well to a Stage 2 ECU remap, which works on power as well as torque. On such a compact front-wheel-drive car, grip and the condition of the engine also set the limits, and nothing is guaranteed in advance. The ROG exhaust is the logical complement to this kind of tuning, giving the car a sound that matches its temperament.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your Mini John Cooper Works F56, the exhaust costs €2,490 in stainless steel and €2,990 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    2 490 €

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

The benchmark for high-end exhausts: tough, corrosion-proof, with a full, rounded sound. The choice of most of our customers.

    Titanium

    2 990 €

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

Around 40% lighter than stainless steel for the same design, with a more metallic sound that turns crystal-clear at high revs. Its finish ranges from brushed to blued tints.

Over time, both hold up: 304 stainless steel stands up to winter salt and damp, and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your Mini John Cooper Works F56.

    ROG remote

ROG remote for opening and closing the valves

A small control unit fits in the boot. Two buttons, open and closed: the valves respond at any moment, whatever the drive mode. Simple to fit, and we stay on hand throughout the installation.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

If your vehicle is fitted with factory valves, the exhaust keeps their existing control. The drive modes decide, just as they did from the factory, with no added electronics.

On the motorway, with the valves closed, the gases pass through the silencer, designed for cruising: no drone at a steady speed. You open up when you feel like it, not when the motorway decides for you. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your Mini John Cooper Works F56, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the John Cooper Works F56

The B48 has a lively, slightly raspy voice that suits the Mini's mischievous character well. Set free, it gains body when accelerating and takes on a more aggressive grain when you push it. As standard, the JCW only lets you hear a smoothed-out version, which does not do justice to its temperament.

With the ROG exhaust and the valves closed, your JCW remains an easy-going city car, discreet in the streets as on the motorway. With the valves open, it becomes the little rocket its handling promises: a start-up that cracks, acceleration full of character, and a sound that accompanies every corner.

Mini John Cooper Works F56: your questions

How much power does an exhaust add on the Mini John Cooper Works F56?

As standard, the Mini John Cooper Works F56 produces 231 hp and 320 Nm. An exhaust system on its own mainly changes the sound, the breathing and the weight; power is gained with an ECU remap. With a Stage 2 build, the published figures reach 284 hp and 389 Nm.

Stainless steel or titanium: which material for the Mini John Cooper Works F56?

For the Mini John Cooper Works F56, the ROG exhaust costs €2,490 in stainless steel and €2,990 in titanium. 304 stainless steel is tough, rounded in tone and the most popular choice; titanium is around 40% lighter for the same design, with a more metallic sound at high revs.

Is the ROG exhaust loud all the time on the Mini John Cooper Works F56?

No. With the valves closed, the gases pass through the silencer and the sound stays comfortable. With the valves open, the engine speaks freely. You switch from one to the other at any moment, with the ROG remote or the factory control if your vehicle has it.

Can the Mini John Cooper Works F56 pass the French MOT with a ROG exhaust?

The ROG exhaust replaces the rear part of the exhaust, without touching the engine or the ECU. Present the car with the valves closed: it is the most discreet setting.

How is the ROG exhaust fitted on the Mini John Cooper Works F56?

No welding or cutting, using clamps and gaskets. Allow two hours on average for a well-equipped mechanic. The exhaust is built for your VIN, which guarantees compatibility before it ships.

What price and lead time for a ROG exhaust on the Mini John Cooper Works F56?

From €2,490 to €2,990 depending on the configuration. Allow 20 working days from order confirmation to delivery. Free delivery in Europe and a 3-year warranty.
