The B48 pushed to 300 hp: the heart of the X1 M35i
The B48 is a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder, turbocharged and fed by direct injection. BMW uses it across a large part of its range, but it is in the M35i version of the X1 that it reaches 300 hp and 400 Nm, sent to all four wheels. The generous torque arrives early, and the X1 proves surprisingly lively for an SUV: strong pick-up, instant response, a true sports car in a family package.
On a turbocharged four-cylinder, the sound is largely shaped after the turbine, in the exhaust. The factory one on the X1 is designed for the comfort of family use and wipes out almost all of the B48's character.
