Porsche 911 Turbo S type 997.2: thrust you can finally hear, the exhaust system guide

The 911 Turbo S 997.2 is an everyday supercar: all-wheel drive, a 3.8-litre biturbo flat-six, 530 hp and 700 Nm, and disconcerting ease of use. Its engine is formidably efficient, but the factory exhaust is designed so that you can barely hear it. This guide explains how to configure a ROG valved exhaust that finally gives this power a voice: material, tips, valves and fitting.

The 3.8 biturbo flat-six: the engine of the 911 Turbo S 997.2

The 911 Turbo S 997.2 is powered by a 3.8-litre direct-injection flat-six, boosted by two variable-geometry turbos. It produces 530 hp and 700 Nm, sent to all four wheels. The thrust is massive and immediate, and the Turbo S delivers its performance with a serenity that made its name, on dry roads as in the rain.

Two turbos placed in the gas path, then a factory exhaust designed for discretion: the Turbo S's flat-six reaches your ears heavily muted. The ROG valved exhaust lets you correct this mismatch between what you feel and what you hear. With the valves open, the engine makes itself heard; with them closed, you keep the factory comfort, without touching the engine or the ECU.

What makes up the exhaust on your Porsche 911 Turbo S type 997.2

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under your Porsche 911 Turbo S type 997.2, all the way to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. Routing, silencer, valves: this is where the sound is shaped. The engine and the ECU stay as they left the factory.

Your Porsche 911 Turbo S type 997.2 in figures

What an exhaust changes straight away is the sound, the engine's breathing and the weight at the rear. For more power, add an ECU remap.

Power

Stage 2609 hp

Stage 2840 Nm

With or without an ECU remap, the exhaust fits and works. But it is an ECU remap at an approved tuning centre that truly unlocks your Porsche 911 Turbo S type 997.2, and that is what we recommend.

With its two turbos, the 3.8 flat-six has a reserve that a Stage 2 ECU remap can exploit through boost management. On an engine of this calibre, the result depends above all on the condition of the engine and the quality of the tuner. The ROG exhaust plays no part in this work: it brings sound, not power.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your Porsche 911 Turbo S type 997.2, the exhaust costs €3,990 in stainless steel and €4,990 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    3 990 €

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

Durable, corrosion-resistant, with a rounded, full sound: the most popular option.

    Titanium

    4 990 €

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

For the same design, it weighs around 40% less than stainless steel. A more metallic note at high revs and a look all of its own, from brushed to blued.

Both materials age well: 304 stainless steel copes with winter and salt, and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your Porsche 911 Turbo S type 997.2.

    ROG remote

ROG remote for opening and closing the valves

The simplest solution: a control unit in the boot and a remote, open or closed at the press of a button, whatever mode you are in. A question while fitting? We will get back to you.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

Does your vehicle have factory valves? The exhaust keeps their existing control: the drive modes operate the valves, as before, with no added electronics.

On a long journey, what matters is the absence of drone at a steady speed. With the valves closed, the exhaust keeps the cabin calm; the show is still there whenever you ask for it. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your Porsche 911 Turbo S type 997.2, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the 911 Turbo S 997.2

The biturbo flat-six has a more muffled voice than a naturally aspirated flat-six, but a rich one: a deep rumble, the rush of the turbos and metallic accents under acceleration. On the standard 997.2, this voice is almost entirely held back; the Turbo S accelerates hard, but in a silence that leaves you wanting more.

With the valves open, the ROG exhaust brings out the rumble of the flat-six and the rush of the turbos, with a presence that finally matches the thrust. With the valves closed, the Turbo S remains the refined grand tourer it has always been, ready for long journeys.
