The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 R232 exhaust in detail.

At the top of the SL R232 range launched in 2022, the SL 63 AMG pushes the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 to 585 hp and 800 Nm, hand-assembled in Affalterbach with the turbos housed in the vee. It shares its architecture with the AMG GT C192; the less powerful SL 55 has its own page.

With the roof down, every decibel counts, and this V8, famous for its thunder, has been made polite by the particulate filter and oversized silencers. With the valves open, the Rog cat-back gives it back a deep rumble punctuated by bangs; with the valves closed, the SL 63 regains the comfort of a great touring roadster, with no fatigue on the motorway.

Built to your VIN, which also confirms the exact compatibility of such a recent model, then fitted in about two hours with clamps and gaskets, no welding. The AMG modes keep control of the factory valves; otherwise, the Rog remote.

Placed just after the turbos, the catalysed downpipe is the part this SL 63 receives under the “Manifold” option; in 200-cell form, it keeps emissions control, which suits the open-top grand tourer. The 100-cell, for its part, will be accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules, while the decat variant is reserved for track use, far from the coastal roads an SL usually cruises. Remapped, the SL 63 rises to 740 hp and 1,000 Nm according to the page. Titanium, around 40% lighter, comes in four finishes; 304 stainless steel remains the most common choice.

Questions about the Mercedes SL 63 AMG R232 exhaust.

What is the difference between the SL 63 system and the SL 55 R232 system?

The two roadsters each have their own page: the 585 hp SL 63 and the 476 hp SL 55. To avoid any confusion between the two, we check your VIN before manufacturing begins.

What does an SL 63 R232 deliver at Stage 2 according to the page?

740 hp and 1,000 Nm, from 585 hp and 800 Nm stock, once the downpipe is fitted and the ECU remapped. Fitted on its own, the cat-back leaves the AMG map untouched.

Before a vehicle inspection, what should be set on a modified SL 63 R232?

Only the valves, to be closed, while keeping the original front section or the 200-cell downpipe: the roadster stays at its factory volume. Fitted with 100 cells, this SL 63 will be accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country. Reserved for track use, the decat variant is not meant to be presented at inspection.

Does a modified SL 63 R232 drone on a long journey with the roof open?

No, with the valves closed: the silencer absorbs the flow and the roadster stays restful. The V8 only speaks up again at your request, via the AMG modes or the Rog remote.
