The Toyota GT86 ZN6 exhaust in detail.

Built from 2012 to 2021, the GT86 ZN6 owes its name to the Corolla AE86 and to its engine’s dimensions, an 86 mm bore and an 86 mm stroke. Light rear-wheel drive, a flat-four mounted very low, a centre of gravity close to the ground: everything serves balance. Its naturally aspirated 2.0-litre FA20 delivers 200 hp and 205 Nm, deliberately restrained power that leaves a large part of the fun to the sound, while the factory system keeps it well in the background. Outside Europe, the same car is called the Toyota 86, and the Scion FR-S in North America from 2013 to 2016.

With the valves open, the Rog valved cat-back frees the boxer’s deep tone, a clean climb all the way to the red line and crisp crackles on the overrun; with the valves closed, the GT86 regains its stock discretion. Phase 1 or the facelifted phase 2, which reached Europe in 2017: your VIN is checked before manufacturing, and the GR86 ZN8 2.4 that succeeded it has its own page.

No welding is needed: clamps and gaskets are enough, and about two hours of work cover fitting on the GT86. The valves stay on the factory control if the car has one; otherwise the Rog remote takes over, with its box tucked away in the trunk.

The “Manifold” option adds the GT86’s front part, the one that houses the catalytic converter. With the stock map, it brings sound and a little weight saving; with an ECU remap, the gain becomes real but stays modest on this naturally aspirated engine, around 3 to 8% depending on the tune. Three versions are available for the ZN6: 200-cell to keep emissions control, 100-cell accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and decat reserved for track use. As for materials, titanium weighs around 40% less than 304 stainless steel for the same design, a real asset on a coupé that lives by its lightness.

Questions about the Toyota GT86 ZN6 exhaust.

Do the GT86 ZN6 and the Subaru BRZ ZC6 share the same Rog system?

Yes, they are twins: one chassis, one FA20 boxer and one factory, Subaru’s in Japan, hence the JF1 VIN that the GT86 also carries. The Rog system is identical, at the same price, and fits the Toyota 86 and the Scion FR-S in exactly the same way.

Does this GT86 ZN6 system fit the GR86 ZN8 launched in 2022?

No. The GR86 ZN8 2.4, built since 2022, is another generation, with its FA24 engine and its own page. This one covers the GT86 ZN6 from 2012 to 2021, phases 1 and 2, after checking the serial number.

Should you expect extra horsepower on a GT86 ZN6 fitted with the cat-back alone?

No: on its own, the cat-back works on the voice and the breathing and takes off a little weight. If you add the front part from the “Manifold” option, an ECU remap can extract a gain from it, real but modest on this naturally aspirated 2.0-litre, depending on the tune.

For the vehicle inspection, how should a modified GT86 ZN6 be set up?

Present it with the valves closed, for a voice close to stock, with the factory front part or its 200-cell version, which keeps the catalytic converter working. A GT86 with the 100-cell part depends on the rules in your country, and a decat version only runs on track.

Is the GT86 ZN6’s engine really a boxer?

Yes: the FA20 is a Subaru flat-four with Toyota’s D-4S injection, naturally aspirated and without a turbo. With the valves open, the Rog system brings that boxer tone to the fore, without distorting it.

Toyota GT86 ZN6: Does a valved exhaust system drone?

No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear muffler and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the highway.

Toyota GT86 ZN6: straight pipe or resonator?

On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
