The Subaru BRZ ZC6 exhaust in detail.
The first generation of the coupé, the BRZ ZC6 from 2012 to 2020 made balance its signature: rear-wheel drive, a flat engine mounted very low, a centre of gravity close to the ground. Its boxer four-cylinder, 200 hp and 205 Nm, is deliberately modest in power, so the sound carries a large part of the experience, and the factory system is utterly discreet.
The boxer’s firing rhythm is part of these cars’ identity. With the valves open, the Rog valved cat-back gives the ZC6 an assertive boxer tone, an expressive climb all the way to the red line and crisp crackles; with the valves closed, the factory discretion returns. The ZD8 2.4 that succeeded it has its own page, and your VIN is checked before manufacturing.
With clamps and gaskets, without welding, the system goes on in about two hours; the valves keep their factory control if there is one, otherwise the Rog remote, whose box sits in the boot, operates them.
The page also offers, under the “Manifold” option, the front part carrying the catalytic converter, whose effect is limited to sound and a little mass as long as the map stays stock; with an ECU remap, the gain then depends on the tune. For a coupé used as much for commuting as for weekend drives, the 200-cell version keeps emissions control, whereas the 100-cell will be accepted or refused depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat part remains reserved for track use. On a coupé that lives by its lightness, titanium, around 40% lighter than 304 stainless steel, has its arguments.

Questions about the Subaru BRZ ZC6 exhaust.
Does the more recent BRZ ZD8 2.4 take the ZC6 system?
No: the 2022-onwards ZD8 is covered on a separate page, with no front part, while the 2012 to 2020 ZC6 gets its own system here, after checking the serial number.
With the Rog system alone, does the BRZ ZC6’s power change?
Not with the cat-back alone, which acts on the voice, the breathing and a little weight. If you add the front part, an ECU remap could extract power from it, depending on the tuning.
Which parts should be kept on a BRZ ZC6 ahead of the vehicle inspection?
The factory front part or its 200-cell version, to keep the catalytic converter working, and valves closed for a stock voice; a ZC6 in 100-cell form depends on your country’s rules, and a decat ZC6 only goes out on track.
Does the BRZ ZC6’s boxer sound like a WRX’s?
It shares the flat layout and its characteristic firing rhythm, but not the same mechanicals. On the ZC6, the Rog system brings out that boxer tone with the valves open, without betraying it.
Does the BRZ ZC6 system also fit a Toyota GT86?
Yes: the Toyota GT86 ZN6, also sold as the Toyota 86 and the Scion FR-S, is the BRZ ZC6’s twin, with the same chassis and the same FA20 engine. It takes the same system, at the same price, on its own page: Toyota GT86 ZN6.
Subaru BRZ ZC6: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
Subaru BRZ ZC6: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
