Porsche 911 Turbo type 996: setting the Mezger engine free, the exhaust system guide

The 911 Turbo type 996 is a supercar you can use every day: four-wheel drive, a widened body and a 3.6-litre biturbo flat-six producing 420 hp. Its engine, derived directly from racing, deserves better than a factory exhaust designed to silence it. Material, valves, tips: this guide details the choices that will give this tamed racing engine its voice back.

The Mezger biturbo flat-six: the racing heritage of the 996 Turbo

Unlike the Carreras of the same generation, the 996 Turbo gets a flat-six derived from the 911 GT1 engine, often called the Mezger engine after its designer. This water-cooled, dry-sump 3.6-litre is boosted by two turbos. It produces 420 hp and 560 Nm, sent to all four wheels, with massive thrust and a robustness that made its reputation.

Two turbos and a factory exhaust designed for comfort: the 996 Turbo has never had the voice of its engine. Lighter than the factory system, the ROG valved exhaust takes its place without touching the engine or the ECU, and lets you choose your register. With the valves closed, the car keeps the civility of a grand tourer. Open, the biturbo flat-six reveals a husky grain and a turbo whoosh that recall its racing ancestry.

How the exhaust on your Porsche 911 Turbo type 996 is put together

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under your Porsche 911 Turbo type 996, all the way to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. This is the part where most of our research and development goes, the part that shapes the sound, and it fits without touching the engine or the ECU.

Your Porsche 911 Turbo type 996 in figures

An exhaust system is judged first by ear and on the scales. The extra horsepower comes from an ECU remap.

The ROG exhaust works with or without an ECU remap. To get the full potential out of your Porsche 911 Turbo type 996, we recommend taking it to an approved tuning centre afterwards.

The Mezger engine is renowned for its strength, and the 996 Turbo has considerable headroom that a Stage 2 remap exploits by working on the pressure of the two turbos. The result depends on the car's condition and history, which a tuner must check before any work; the ROG exhaust is the logical complement to it.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your Porsche 911 Turbo type 996, the exhaust costs €3,390 in stainless steel and €4,140 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    3 390 €

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

The safe bet: strong, corrosion-proof, with a full, rounded sound. The best value for money.

    Titanium

    4 140 €

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

It makes the exhaust around 40% lighter for the same design. Its note is more metallic and clearer higher up the rev range, and its finish ranges from brushed to blued.

No worries on durability: 304 stainless steel shrugs off winter road salt and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your Porsche 911 Turbo type 996.

    ROG remote

Télécommande ROG d’ouverture et de fermeture des clapets

A discreet control unit in the boot and a two-button remote: you open and close whenever you like, independently of the drive modes. For fitting, we support you by phone or by email.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

For vehicles fitted with factory valves: the exhaust connects to their control and the drive modes stay in charge, with no extra control unit.

At 130 km/h, many sports exhausts drone. Here, with the valves closed, the exhaust flows through the silencer and stays composed when cruising; open, it makes itself heard when you choose. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your Porsche 911 Turbo type 996, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the 996 Turbo's biturbo flat-six

The 996 Turbo's biturbo flat-six has a more muffled voice than a naturally aspirated Carrera, but it is rich in texture: a husky growl at idle and a very present turbo whoosh under acceleration. The heavy, baffled factory exhaust strips out almost all of its substance and leaves only a muffled murmur.

With the valves open, the ROG exhaust lets the flat-six express itself: a husky grain every time you accelerate, the whistle of the turbos more noticeable, and livelier lift-offs. With the valves closed, the 996 Turbo remains a grand tourer, at ease on a long motorway journey as well as in town.
