Which valved exhaust for a BMW 218i F22 or F23?
The Rog system for the BMW 218i is a valved cat-back exhaust for the F22 coupé and F23 convertible, built to your VIN in 304 stainless steel or titanium for the 136 hp B38 1.5-litre turbo three-cylinder. Valves open, the three-cylinder's distinctive pulse finally comes through; closed, the 218i keeps the neutrality of the factory system.
Sound, options and fitting in detail: our BMW 218i F22 / F23 guide.
The 218i is the entry point to the F22 coupé and F23 convertible: a compact rear-wheel-drive car powered by the B38, a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder giving 136 hp and 220 Nm. The system fits both pre- and post-facelift 218i, while the 220i, in N20 and B48 form, and the M240i each have a separate page.
A three-cylinder has a tone all its own, slightly hoarse and irregular, with a pulse that neither four- nor six-cylinders have. On the 218i, the factory exhaust tuned for neutrality lets practically none of it through. With the valves open, the valved Rog cat-back brings out that pulse, with a richer tone under load and crisp crackles; with the valves closed, the rear silencer takes over again and the coupé becomes as calm as on delivery.
For fitting, no blowtorch: clamps, gaskets and about two hours, with a system built to your VIN. A coupé or convertible with factory valves keeps its control; the others receive the Rog remote, which operates from inside the cabin as well as from outside.
Here the “Manifold” option refers to the downpipe, the catalysed part at the turbo outlet, and it only yields power with a suitable map; on its own, it gives sound and a little lightness. For a three-cylinder driven every day, the 200-cell sports catalytic converter keeps emissions control intact; its 100-cell cousin is accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. Both the coupé and the convertible can be ordered in 304 stainless steel or in titanium around 40% lighter, the latter in three finishes.

Questions about the BMW 218i F22 / F23 exhaust.
F23 convertible or F22 coupé: does the 218i take the same system in both cases?
Yes, both body styles are listed on the page; the VIN requested with the order simply serves to pin down the version and model year of your 218i before building.
Does the 218i benefit from an ECU remap once fitted with the system?
The cat-back lives very happily with the standard electronics; it is when you add the downpipe that a map becomes worthwhile on this small B38, with the page then stating 200 hp and 300 Nm in Stage 2 instead of 136 hp and 220 Nm.
BMW 218i F22 / F23 with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
With its valves closed, the small three-cylinder becomes as hushed as on delivery, and its catalytic converter keeps working behind a cat-back only or a 200-cell downpipe; for the 100-cell variant, accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules, it is best to check, the decat version being reserved for track use.
Can a 218i’s three-cylinder really sound good?
Yes, and it often surprises owners: set free, the 218i takes on a gruff, rhythmic tone of its own, far from a typical four-cylinder, then returns to its factory calm as soon as the valves close.
For a 218i convertible driven mostly in summer, stainless steel or titanium?
304 stainless steel remains the most common choice, robust and round-sounding; titanium appeals to those who want to lighten the rear by around 40% for the same design and choose a colour, from brushed to purple.
BMW 218i F22 / F23: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW 218i F22 / F23: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.

BMW 218i / 220i F22: the complete exhaust system guide
The 218i and 220i F22 offer the pleasure of a compact rear-wheel-drive coupé at an accessible price, with quiet four-cylinder engines, too quiet. This is the classic case where a valved exhaust changes how the whole car is perceived: it...
