The Mercedes-AMG ML63 W164 exhaust in detail.
The ML63 W164 received the M156, the first engine designed entirely by AMG: a naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 hand-built according to the “one man, one engine” principle, 510 hp and 630 Nm sent to all four wheels. Without forced induction, it responds instantly and revs with rare appetite, giving the SUV a very sporty temperament, for the 2007 to 2011 model years covered by this page.
A cavernous rumble at idle, a roar that swells with revs: the M156 is among the loudest V8s of its generation, but the ML63’s factory exhaust keeps a good part of it locked up, especially at moderate speeds. The Rog valved cat-back lets it rumble from start-up and roar with every acceleration; with the valves closed, the SUV becomes discreet in town and relaxing on the motorway again.
Built for your ML63 from its VIN, the system bolts on in place of the old one in about two hours, with no welding. The valves stay on the factory control if the SUV has it; otherwise, the Rog remote. The C63 W204, which shares the M156, has its own page, and the later twin-turbo V8 generations are not covered here.
On this naturally aspirated V8, the “Manifold” option covers the catalysed front section that follows the manifolds. Its design matters for cylinder filling at high revs; with an ECU remap, the gain remains real but modest, between 3 and 8%, and the page publishes 562 hp and 693 Nm at Stage 2. With 200 cells, emissions control is maintained. Beyond that, the 100-cell version will be accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use, terrain rarely visited by an SUV of this weight. Titanium, around 40% lighter than 304 stainless steel, makes the M156 sound a little brighter at high revs.

Questions about the Mercedes-AMG ML63 W164 6.2 V8 exhaust.
My ML63 W164 is a 2006 model: do the system and the front section suit it?
For the front section, the year 2006 is excluded; the page covers the ML63 W164 6.2 from 2007 to 2011. Send us the VIN of a 2006 model: we will at least check the cat-back’s compatibility before manufacturing.
What gain can you hope for from an ECU remap on the ML63 W164’s M156?
A modest gain, as on any naturally aspirated engine: the Stage 2 table on the page goes from 510 hp and 630 Nm to 562 hp and 693 Nm. The map mainly refines cylinder filling and response; the cat-back alone works without it.
For its vehicle inspection, how should an ML63 W164 fitted with the system be presented?
Valves closed, with the factory front section or the 200-cell version: stock sound, catalytic converters active. With a 100-cell front section, the ML63 will be accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules. Reserved for track use, the decat version does not come into consideration for an inspection.
Does the front section really bring anything to the ML63 W164?
More than on a turbo engine, because its geometry affects the V8’s cylinder filling at high revs. The gain remains modest, around 3 to 8% with an ECU remap; without one, it is mainly the M156’s voice that grows richer.
Mercedes-AMG ML63 W164 6.2 V8: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
