The McLaren 720S exhaust in detail.

At its launch, the 720S redefined the category with the violence of its acceleration; the only unanimous criticism concerned its quiet sound. Yet the 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 has the voice; it is the factory exhaust that confiscates it. With the valves open, the Rog cat-back gives it back a furious rumble, the breathing of the turbos and crisp bangs: the McLaren finally sounds the way it accelerates. With the valves closed, back to calm.

Our page targets the 720S and its 4.0-litre V8, 720 hp and 770 Nm, 2017 to 2019 model years. The Spider is not named by the supplier source: we neither confirm nor exclude it, and check by VIN before manufacturing. The 570S and 765LT have their own page.

As an option, the page offers the catalysed downpipe, under the name “Manifold”. It is the part that frees the flow at the turbo outlet; without an ECU remap, its effect is limited to sound and a little weight. With a suitable map, the published Stage 2 figures for the 720S reach 840 hp and 945 Nm, and the 200-cell variant keeps emissions control.

Nothing is cut or welded under the 720S: clamps, gaskets and about two hours of work for an equipped mechanic. Factory valves retained if your car has them, the two-button Rog remote otherwise. 304 stainless steel gives the V8 a full voice; titanium, around 40% lighter for the same design, makes it more metallic and comes in brushed, chrome, gold or purple.

Questions about the McLaren 720S 4.0 V8 biturbo exhaust.

Does the 720S system fit the 720S Spider?

Our supplier lists the 720S for 2017 to 2019 and says nothing about the Spider version. So we check by VIN, before manufacturing, rather than claim a compatibility our sources do not document.

Does the 720S downpipe require a new map?

The cat-back alone works with the factory software. An ECU remap becomes useful with the downpipe: it converts the flow into power, up to the 840 hp and 945 Nm published for Stage 2, and avoids the warning light linked to the post-cat sensor.

Vehicle inspection coming up: which 720S configuration should be presented?

With the valves closed, it returns to a sound close to stock, and that is how it should be presented. With the factory catalytic converter or a 200-cell downpipe, the car cleans its emissions just as it did when new. The 100-cell downpipe, for its part, depends on the vehicle and your country’s rules, which accept it or not. As for the decat 720S, reserved for track use, it belongs at a track day rather than at the inspection centre.

How long does it take to receive a 720S system?

Allow 20 working days from order confirmation to delivery: the system is built for your car, inspected, then delivered free of charge against signature. Fitting then takes about two hours.
