Porsche 911 Carrera type 993: the last air-cooled flat-six, the exhaust system guide

The 911 Carrera type 993 holds a special place in Porsche history: it is the last 911 with an air-cooled engine. Its 3.6-litre flat-six has a unique voice, blending the whoosh of the cooling fan with the metallic grain of the opposed cylinders, but the factory exhaust keeps most of it to itself. This guide helps you choose a ROG exhaust that respects this mechanical heritage, option by option.

The air-cooled 3.6 flat-six: the soul of the 993

The 993 Carrera gets a 3.6-litre horizontally opposed six-cylinder, air-cooled and mounted behind the rear axle, in true 911 tradition. It produces 272 hp and 330 Nm in its original form, before the Varioram variable intake came along to enhance it. Without forced induction, it offers instant throttle response and an eager climb through the revs, which gives the driving a very direct mechanical feel.

On an air-cooled flat-six, you hear everything: the fan, the mechanicals and above all the exhaust, which carries the engine's voice. Yet the 993's factory exhaust stifles it, to meet the comfort expectations of its era. The ROG valved exhaust replaces it without touching the engine or the ECU, and lets you choose between factory discretion and the full voice of the flat-six, without altering the nature of the car.

What makes up the exhaust on your Porsche 911 Carrera type 993

Here is what the ROG exhaust replaces, and where the sound is shaped.

How the exhaust system is laid out From left to right: the engine, then the ROG cat-back with its valved silencer and tips.ROG cat-back: the complete exhaustEngine

The cat-back is the complete exhaust system

It is everything you can see under the chassis of your Porsche 911 Carrera type 993, right through to the tips: pipes, silencer, valves. Routing, silencer, valves: this is where the sound is shaped. The engine and the ECU stay as they left the factory.

The figures for your Porsche 911 Carrera type 993

What an exhaust changes straight away is the sound, the engine's breathing and the weight at the rear. For more power, add an ECU remap.

With or without an ECU remap, the exhaust fits and works. But it is an ECU remap at an approved tuning centre that truly unleashes your Porsche 911 Carrera type 993, and that is what we recommend.

Configuring your exhaust, step by step

3 choices, in the same order as the product page configurator.

  1. Step 1 of 3: Material: stainless steel or titanium

For your Porsche 911 Carrera type 993, the exhaust costs €3,990 in stainless steel and €4,990 in titanium.

    304 stainless steel

    3 990 €

    Weight
    Baseline
    Sound
    Full and rounded

Durable, corrosion-resistant, with a rounded, full sound: the most popular option.

    Titanium

    4 990 €

    Weight
    Around 40% lighter
    Sound
    Metallic, crystal-clear

For the same design, it weighs around 40% less than stainless steel. A more metallic note at high revs and a look all of its own, from brushed to blued.

Both materials age well: 304 stainless steel copes with winter and salt, and titanium does not rust. Stainless steel or titanium: what really changes.

  2. Step 2 of 3: Valves: ROG remote or factory control

Two ways to control the valves on your Porsche 911 Carrera type 993.

    ROG remote

ROG remote for opening and closing the valves

The simplest solution: a control unit in the boot and a remote, open or closed at the press of a button, whatever mode you are in. A question while fitting? We will get back to you.

    Factory control

    • Only for vehicles fitted with factory valves
    • Controlled by the drive modes

Does your vehicle have factory valves? The exhaust keeps their existing control: the drive modes operate the valves, as before, with no added electronics.

On a long journey, what matters is the absence of drone at a steady speed. With the valves closed, the exhaust keeps the cabin calm; the show is still there whenever you ask for it. More about exhaust drone.

  3. Step 3 of 3: Tips: the visual signature

Match the tips to the style of your Porsche 911 Carrera type 993, understated or bold. A particular finish in mind? Send us a photo and we will look at it together.

The ROG sound signature on the 993's flat-six

The air-cooled flat-six has a voice nothing can imitate: a gruff, slightly metallic rumble, enriched by the whoosh of the fan, that hardens as the revs rise. It is this tone that enthusiasts look for in a 993. The factory exhaust delivers a muffled version of it, in which the engine's personality barely shows through.

With the ROG exhaust and the valves open, the character of the flat-six returns: a more present idle, a gruff grain under acceleration and a climb through the revs full of texture. With the valves closed, your 993 keeps a welcome discretion for long journeys or trips into town, without betraying the spirit of the car.

From the factory, the Porsche 911 Carrera type 993 produces 272 hp and 330 Nm. Without a remap, the exhaust transforms the voice and lightens the rear; it is the ECU remap that increases power.
