The BMW 220i N20 F22 / F23 exhaust in detail.
The first 220i in the 2 Series, the N20 version was sold from 2014 to 2016, as both F22 coupé and F23 convertible, with the same system. Its 2.0-litre direct-injection four-cylinder combines a twin-scroll turbo with BMW’s beloved Valvetronic valve gear: 184 hp and 270 Nm. The torque arrives early, and rear-wheel drive lets you enjoy it out of every corner.
The N20 is not known as a singer, and its factory exhaust, which favours silence across the entire rev range, has a lot to do with it. Freed up, though, it reveals a metallic, eager tone whose grain thickens under acceleration. Our valved cat-back gives it a fuller sound at start-up and a clear presence with every upshift; with the valves closed, the 220i becomes a calm compact again.
In the garage, a morning is enough: the system, bent to your VIN, is assembled with clamps and gaskets, no welding, in about two hours on a lift. The factory valve control stays in place if your coupé has one; otherwise the Rog remote, independent of the drive modes, takes care of it, and the 220i B48 introduced in 2016 comes under another page.
Under the “Manifold” option, the page actually offers the downpipe that follows the turbo and contains the catalytic converter; without an ECU remap, it is limited to sound and a slight weight saving. For exhaust gas treatment, the hierarchy is simple on this N20: 200 cells maintain it, 100 cells are accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. As for the cat-back, 304 stainless steel appeals for its robustness against winters, titanium for its roughly 40% lower mass and its brushed, gold or purple finishes.

Questions about the BMW 220i N20 F22 / F23 2.0T exhaust.
Does my late-2016 220i already have the B48?
It is possible, because the 220i changed engine in 2016 and each version has its own page; send us your VIN: we identify the engine and confirm the right system before manufacturing.
What power can you expect from a remapped 220i N20?
With the downpipe and a map carried out by an approved tuner, the Stage 2 figures published for the 220i N20 coupé are 275 hp and 420 Nm; the cat-back alone requires no work on the ECU.
BMW 220i N20 2.0T with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
With the cat-back only or the 200-cell sports catalytic converter, emissions control is retained: present the car with the valves closed. The 100-cell brings more sound and flow, and whether it is accepted at the emissions test depends on the car and local rules; the decat version is intended for track use.
Does this system apply to the 220i convertible?
Yes. The F22 coupé and the F23 convertible, sold as a 220i N20 from 2015 to 2016, take the same Rog system, with the same clamp-and-gasket fitting. Your VIN is only used to confirm the engine, N20 or B48, before manufacturing.
Is the sound of a freed-up N20 pleasant day to day?
Yes, because you stay in control: with the valves open, a crisp, present tone that accompanies every gear; with them closed, the neutral standard hum, ideal for town and long journeys.
BMW 220i N20 F22 / F23 2.0T: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.

BMW 220i N20 F22 / F23: the small rear-wheel-drive car finds its voice, the exhaust system guide
As a coupé or a convertible, the BMW 220i remains one of the few rear-wheel-drive compacts. Its 184 hp turbocharged N20 gives it the drive needed to enjoy this balance, but the factory exhaust has made it almost mute. A...
