The BMW 428i N20 F32 / F33 / F36 exhaust in detail.
The 4 Series won people over with its design: long bonnet, low roofline, planted stance. As a 428i, built from 2013 to 2016, it receives the N20, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with direct injection and a twin-scroll turbo, for 245 hp and 350 Nm. More compact than a six-cylinder, it lightens the front end and helps agility through sequences of corners. The B48,430i and the 435i have their own pages.
The N20 has a deeper voice than you might imagine, with a slightly hoarse grain under acceleration. The 428i’s factory exhaust turns it into neutral background noise that says nothing of the engine’s effort, an awkward mismatch on a car with such an assertive silhouette. With the valves open, our cat-back gives it back that grain: a more present start-up, a firm note when you get back on the throttle; with the valves closed, the 4 Series resumes its role as an elegant, quiet car.
No cutting spoils the 4 Series rear valance: the system, bent to your VIN, connects with clamps and gaskets in about two hours, and the 428i keeps its factory valve control if it has one, or receives the Rog remote.
Under the “Manifold” option, the page sells the N20’s catalysed downpipe; fitted on its own, it adds a little sound and removes a few kilos, and it is with an ECU remap that it releases power. On a coupé driven every day, the 200-cell variant keeps the 428i’s emissions control, the 100-cell one is accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. On the cat-back side, 304 stainless steel pairs with understated bodywork, titanium, around 40% lighter, with a more showy tip colour.

Questions about the BMW 428i N20 F32 / F33 / F36 2.0T exhaust.
Coupé, convertible or Gran Coupé: which 428i takes this system?
All three. The F32 coupé, the F33 convertible and the F36 Gran Coupé take the same Rog system, as on our 435i and 440i pages, with the same clamp-and-gasket fitting. Your VIN is only used to confirm the model year before manufacturing.
What is the potential of a 428i’s N20 once remapped?
The Stage 2 figures published on the page are 295 hp and 420 Nm, achieved with a downpipe and a map from an approved tuner; the cat-back alone works with the stock engine management.
BMW 428i N20 2.0T with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
With the cat-back only or the 200-cell sports catalytic converter, emissions control is retained: present the car with the valves closed. The 100-cell brings more sound and flow, and whether it is accepted at the emissions test depends on the car and local rules; the decat version is intended for track use.
Does a four-cylinder suit such an elegant 4 Series?
Yes, provided you let it be heard: the N20 has a deep, gruff grain that our system brings out with the valves open, finally matching the 428i’s sound to its silhouette.
Will my 428i drone at a steady cruising speed?
Not with the valves closed: the gases pass through the cruising silencer and the 4 Series stays hushed on the motorway, with the valves only opening when you ask.
BMW 428i N20 F32 / F33 / F36 2.0T: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW 428i N20 F32 / F33 / F36 2.0T: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
