The Mazda MX-5 NA exhaust in detail.
The first MX-5, the NA from 1989 to 1997, launched a simple idea: a small, light, rear-wheel-drive roadster in which driver and car become one. The Japanese call it Jinba Ittai, the unity of horse and rider. Its naturally aspirated four-cylinder, 115 hp and 148 Nm in the version described on the page, lives for revs.
With the roof down, you listen to every mile, which is why the MX-5 community so often starts with the exhaust. On the NA, the Rog valved cat-back replaces an exhaust that kept the engine singing under its breath: a clear, mechanical voice that livens up as the needle climbs, little crackles on the overrun, then calm again as soon as the valves close. Before manufacturing, we identify your roadster from its VIN.
On a roadster some thirty years old, the absence of welding is reassuring: clamps and gaskets are enough, in about two hours, with the factory valve control if the car has it, or the Rog remote and its small box.
The page also offers, under the “Manifold” option, the part between the engine and the cat-back that carries the catalytic converter, but on a 115 hp four-cylinder nobody is looking for another hundred horsepower, and an accompanying ECU remap would only bring around 3 to 8%. For a collectible NA taken out at weekends, the 200-cell is the one that keeps emissions control, a 100-cell will be accepted or refused depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version only makes sense for track use. Titanium, around 40% lighter than 304 stainless steel for the same design, wonderfully extends the roadster’s lightweight philosophy.

Questions about the Mazda MX-5 NA exhaust.
My MX-5 NA has the 1.8 engine: does the system suit it?
The page only publishes the figures for a 115 hp, 148 Nm version and does not distinguish between the NA’s engines. Before ordering, send us your roadster’s VIN; we check compatibility before manufacturing.
Is a modified map worthwhile on a 115 hp MX-5 NA?
Very limited: with the cat-back alone, the original management is perfectly suitable, and even with the front part the gain would remain a few per cent, because an NA is savoured for its voice and lightness far more than for its spec sheet.
Mazda MX-5 NA with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
The roadster is presented with the valves closed, with its factory front part or the 200-cell version, so that the catalytic converter keeps working; a 100-cell will depend on your country’s own assessment, and a decat NA only belongs on track days.
With the roof down, does a modified MX-5 NA become tiring?
No, thanks to the valves: closed, the system stays composed on long runs, and you open them on the back roads, where Jinba Ittai comes into its own.
Mazda MX-5 NA: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
Mazda MX-5 NA: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
