Configuration
Mazda MX-5 / MX-5 RF ND 2.0 Skyactiv-G Valved Exhaust System (2016-2021)
Valves
Operated by remote control, factory-paired.
Estimated at 0.50 m from the outlet, 45°, 2,000 rpm with a warm engine. Allow ± 2 dB depending on the engine and measuring point. A 3 dB difference is audible in a direct comparison; 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.

The Mazda MX-5 / MX-5 RF ND 2.0 Skyactiv-G exhaust in detail.
The MX-5 ND follows Jinba Ittai, the unity of horse and rider: lightness, balance, total connection. In this philosophy, sound is part of the experience, especially with the roof down, and it is in fact the first thing the MX-5 community improves. From the factory, the little four-cylinder sings in a muted voice.
The naturally aspirated 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G produces 160 or 184 hp and 200 to 205 Nm depending on the model year, between 2016 and 2021. The page is for this 2.0; the 1.5 is not concerned, and your VIN is checked before manufacturing. With the valves open, the Rog valved cat-back gives the roadster a lively, mechanical tone, an expressive climb and light crackles on the overrun; with the valves closed, the neighbours have nothing to complain about.
Under this small roadster, fitting takes only about two hours, with clamps and gaskets, no welding; the factory valve control is retained if there is one, and otherwise the Rog remote, whose box slips into the boot, takes over.
On this naturally aspirated engine, the “Manifold” option sells the manifolds, with the original catalytic converter integrated, whose geometry matters for cylinder filling: with an ECU remap, the gain is real but modest, in the order of 3 to 8%, and without one it is the voice that changes. For a roadster driven all year round, the 200-cell version keeps emissions control, the 100-cell version will be accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use, for MX-5s entered in track days. To keep the lightweight spirit, titanium removes around 40% of the weight for the same design and comes in brushed, gold or purple; 304 stainless steel remains the robust choice.

Questions about the Mazda MX-5 / MX-5 RF ND 2.0 Skyactiv-G exhaust.
As the owner of an MX-5 ND 1.5, can I fit this system designed for the 2.0?
No, this page targets the 2016 to 2021 MX-5 ND 2.0, and the 1.5 is not covered. If you are unsure about your roadster, the VIN, requested when you order, lets us check before manufacturing.
Does a custom map make sense on the MX-5 ND 2.0?
With the cat-back alone, nothing requires touching the ECU. With the manifolds, a new map turns the better cylinder filling into a few per cent, around 3 to 8%: on this roadster, what you are really after is the voice and the driving pleasure.
For the vehicle inspection, does a modified MX-5 ND 2.0 need to go back to standard?
Not necessarily: with the valves closed and factory or 200-cell manifolds, the roadster regains a well-behaved voice and keeps its catalytic converters active. The 100-cell will be judged according to your country and the car; in decat form, the MX-5 stays on the track.
Roof open, does the MX-5 ND with a Rog system become tiring on the motorway?
No, with the valves closed: the system stays composed at a steady speed. You open up on the back roads, where Jinba Ittai comes into its own, via the factory control or the Rog remote.
Does the MX-5 RF 2.0 take the same system as the roadster?
Yes. The roadster and the RF take the same Rog system: same chassis, same 2.0 Skyactiv-G, same clamp-and-gasket fitting. Your VIN is only used to confirm the version and model year before manufacturing.
Mazda MX-5 / MX-5 RF ND 2.0 Skyactiv-G: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
Mazda MX-5 / MX-5 RF ND 2.0 Skyactiv-G: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
