The Mercedes-AMG GLS63 X166 exhaust in detail.
The size of a long-distance cruiser and a 585 hp, 900 Nm 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8: the GLS63 X166, produced from 2015 to 2019, moves its mass with astonishing ease. The old GL63, before the name change, is not covered by this page; the GLS63 X167 with the 4.0-litre V8 has its own page.
This V8 from AMG’s golden era, with its generous displacement and rolling thunder, largely sleeps beneath silencers tuned for a luxury clientele. With the valves open, the Rog cat-back awakens its depth and its bangs on the overrun; with the valves closed, the GLS becomes a lounge on wheels for the whole family again, with its cruising comfort intact.
The GLS valved system, built to your VIN, bolts on in about two hours under this large chassis, without welding. The factory valve control is kept when the vehicle has one; otherwise, the Rog remote, with its unit in the boot.
Here the “Manifold” option refers to the 5.5-litre’s catalysed downpipe. Chosen with 200 cells, it keeps emissions control, the relevant version for an SUV like this. More open, a 100-cell, accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and a decat version, reserved for track use, hardly belong on an SUV of this size that carries the whole family. With a completely redone map, this V8 climbs to 693 hp and 1,208 Nm according to the page. Titanium removes around 40% of the mass for the same design; 304 stainless steel remains the most widespread choice.

Questions about the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 X166 5.5 V8 biturbo exhaust.
Can my GL63 X166 from before the name change take the GLS63 system?
Not documented: our page targets the 2015 to 2019 GLS63 X166 5.5 and extends neither the system nor the front section to the GL63. If in doubt about your SUV’s name, the VIN settles it before manufacturing.
How far can a GLS63 X166 go when remapped with the downpipe?
According to our data, up to 693 hp and 1,208 Nm at Stage 2, against 585 hp and 900 Nm stock. These figures assume a full map; the cat-back on its own fits without touching the ECU.
For a vehicle inspection, how should a modified GLS63 X166 be configured?
Presented with the valves closed, with the factory front section or the 200-cell downpipe, it keeps a limousine sound and active emissions control. If the GLS has a 100-cell downpipe, its acceptance depends on the vehicle and your country’s rules. Reserved for track use, the decat variant has no reason to be on a GLS presented for inspection.
Do passengers in a modified GLS63 X166 hear the V8 all the time?
No: with the valves closed, the flow runs through the silencer and the cabin regains its factory calm. The driver opens up only when they wish.
Mercedes-AMG GLS63 X166 5.5 V8 biturbo: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
