The Mercedes-AMG GT R C190 / R190 exhaust in detail.
A dense rumble at idle, a full, hoarse climb, very pronounced lift-offs: the M178 of the GT R C190 has the typical voice of cross-plane crankshaft AMG V8s. Placed in the centre of the vee, its two turbos nevertheless round off its tone, and the factory exhaust, a compromise between sport and the demands of the road, lets only part of it through.
This page covers the GT R for the 2019 to 2021 model years; the 2017 and 2018 models are not covered, and the GT and the GT S have their own system. Dry sump, engine mounted very low in a front-mid position, 585 hp and 700 Nm sent to the rear wheels: the thrust never seems to fade right up to the rev limiter.
The Rog valved cat-back, or valve exhaust, changes this relationship: open, a frank rumble at start-up, furious climbs through the revs, downshifts clearly present under braking; closed, enough discretion to leave early in the morning for a circuit without being noticed. It is built to your VIN and fitted with clamps and gaskets, without welding, in about two hours, with the factory valves retained or the Rog remote.
The catalysed downpipe that follows the turbos is sold here under the “Manifold” option. For a GT R also driven on the open road, the 200-cell version keeps emissions control. The more open 100-cell will be accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, so it is worth finding out before adopting it on a road-going GT R; the decat version, for its part, is reserved for track use, for track days. The page publishes a Stage 2 of 672 hp and 893 Nm, which assumes a full ECU remap. Titanium or 304 stainless steel: the former takes off around 40% of the mass, a real argument on a car designed for the track.

Questions about the Mercedes-AMG GT R C190 / R190 4.0 V8 biturbo exhaust.
Are the first GT R C190s, 2017 and 2018 model years, covered by this valved system?
Those two model years are excluded: the page covers the 2019 to 2021 GT R, system as well as front section. Send us your car’s VIN and we will study the case before any manufacturing, with no obligation.
With the downpipe and a new map, what power does the page quote for the GT R C190?
It shows 672 hp and 893 Nm at Stage 2, where the GT R’s M178 leaves the factory with 585 hp and 700 Nm. The AMG 4.0-litre V8 family exists in more powerful versions, a sign of real headroom. None of this is needed to enjoy the cat-back, which works with the original engine management.
Mercedes-AMG GT R C190 4.0 V8 biturbo with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
With the cat-back only or the 200-cell sports catalytic converter, emissions control is retained: present the car with the valves closed. The 100-cell brings more sound and flow, and whether it is accepted at the emissions test depends on the car and local rules; the decat version is intended for track use.
Can the GT R C190’s AMG modes still be used to open the valves?
If the car left the factory with controlled valves, the exhaust connects to them and each mode keeps its behaviour. The Rog remote remains an option if you prefer to decide independently of the programme.
Does the AMG GT R Roadster R190 take the same system as the coupé?
Yes. The GT R C190 coupé and the GT R Roadster R190 take the same Rog system: same chassis, same 4.0 twin-turbo V8, same clamp-and-gasket fitting. Your VIN is only used to confirm the version and model year before manufacturing.
Mercedes-AMG GT R C190 / R190 4.0 V8 biturbo: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
