The BMW 316i F30 / F31 exhaust in detail.
The 316i is the most accessible F30 3 Series saloon: a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, 136 hp and 220 Nm, sold from 2013 to 2015 according to this page. Reliable, widespread and well known to workshops, this engine makes an excellent base for personalisation, and the exhaust is precisely the change that most transforms how the car feels for the money spent.
From the factory, the 316i tells you nothing about its engine: the exhaust is designed for absolute neutrality, and on board you mostly hear the tyres. Our cat-back, valved or valve exhaust depending on the term you prefer, removes superfluous silencers and gives the small four-cylinder a richer tone, a stronger character under load and crisp crackles on the overrun when the valves are open. Closed, they force the gases through the rear silencer, and the saloon regains its stock discretion.
The small saloon only spends a morning at the garage: a system bent to your VIN, clamps, gaskets, not a single weld, then the factory control kept if it exists or the Rog remote if not, with the other F30 engines, from the 320i to the 340i, having their own pages.
The “Manifold” option on the page corresponds to the downpipe, the catalysed pipe that follows the turbo: on its own, it brings a little sound and lightness, and only with an ECU remap does it release power. Of the three variants, the everyday 316i logically leans towards the 200-cell, which leaves emissions control intact; the 100-cell is accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. For the cat-back, 304 stainless steel covers most of the needs of an entry-level saloon, while titanium, around 40% lighter, adds a touch of colour.

Questions about the BMW 316i F30 / F31 1.6T exhaust.
Can the 316i Touring F31 or a 2012 saloon be fitted with the system?
Yes for the F31 Touring: the F30 saloon and the F31 Touring take the same Rog system, with the same 1.6-litre turbo and the same clamp-and-gasket fitting. For a 2012 saloon, before the years covered by this page, send us the VIN: we check before manufacturing.
Can a remapped 316i really move up a class?
Almost: the published Stage 2 figures take it to 221 hp and 336 Nm, more than a standard 320i, but only if the downpipe comes with a map at an approved tuner; for the cat-back, the ECU stays factory.
BMW 316i F30 1.6T with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
With the cat-back only or the 200-cell sports catalytic converter, emissions control is retained: present the car with the valves closed. The 100-cell brings more sound and flow, and whether it is accepted at the emissions test depends on the car and local rules; the decat version is intended for track use.
Does a sports exhaust make sense on a 136 hp 316i?
Yes, because it is the modification that most changes how the car feels day to day: the saloon gains an assertive voice with the valves open, without losing any comfort with them closed.
For a high-mileage 316i, is stainless steel enough?
Easily: 304 stainless steel takes the miles, salt and damp in its stride. Titanium remains an enthusiast’s option, around 40% lighter for the same design, for those who want a brushed, gold or purple finish.
BMW 316i F30 / F31 1.6T: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW 316i F30 / F31 1.6T: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
