    BMWX5 E70

The BMW X5 M E70 exhaust in detail.

With the X5 M E70, BMW M produced one of its first two SUVs and gave it a 4.4-litre V8 with its two turbos housed in the vee: 555 hp and 680 Nm, massive torque very early that moves this family-sized vehicle with disconcerting ease. The 2010 to 2013 cars are the ones we have documented. According to the guide, the X6 M E71 shares the system but has its own page, as does the X5 M F85 that followed.

A V8 has a deep, meaty voice, made of tight pulses that quicken with the revs; on this first M SUV, the turbos at the heart of the vee and the factory exhaust hold back most of it, so you feel the thrust while hearing only a whisper. With the valves open, our cat-back lets the V8 rumble from start-up and rise in a dense wave with every acceleration; with the valves closed, the X5 M becomes a touring car again.

Installation requires no welding: clamps, gaskets, about two hours, and a system made to your X5 M’s VIN, with the factory valve control retained or the Rog remote.

Under the “Manifold” option, the page sells the V8’s front section, with its catalytic converters; on its own, it only changes voice and weight, the horsepower coming from an ECU remap. This pioneer of M SUVs keeps its catalytic converter active with the 200-cell front section; the 100-cell one is accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. As for material, 304 stainless steel with a meaty bass, or titanium around 40% lighter, in brushed, gold or purple.

    Questions about the BMW X5 M E70 4.4TT exhaust.

    Does the X6 M E71 use the same system as the X5 M E70?

The guide pairs them, as the X6 M E71 is simply an X5 M E70 with a sloping roof; we nonetheless keep one page per model, and your SUV’s VIN is still checked before manufacturing.

    Does the X5 M E70’s V8 lend itself to Stage 2?

The page publishes 662 hp and 840 Nm, with front section and an ECU remap by an approved tuner; on an engine of this generation, cooling and maintenance history matter as much as the map.

Vehicle inspection for a modified X5 M E70: what should I plan for?

Closed valves and a front section that treats emissions, original or 200-cell; this way the first M SUV presents itself as it left the factory, while the 100-cell is accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use.

Why is the X5 M E70 so hard to hear from the factory?

Because its turbos, placed at the heart of the V, already filter the pulses, and the factory system finishes the job; our cat-back lets the rumble through with the valves open.

Does titanium make a noticeable weight difference on such a heavy SUV?

For the same design, it weighs around 40% less than 304 stainless steel; on an X5 M, it is mainly the V8’s brighter note that you notice.

    BMW X5 M E70 4.4TT: Does a valved exhaust system drone?

No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.

    BMW X5 M E70 4.4TT: straight pipe or resonator?

On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
