The BMW X5 M50i G05 exhaust in detail.
The X5 M50i G05 is an athlete disguised as a tourer: a 4.4-litre V8 with its two turbos housed in the vee, 530 hp and 750 Nm sent to all four wheels by xDrive, in a large family SUV. Covered from 2019 to 2022, it sits alongside the six-cylinder X5 40i, while the facelifted X5 M60i and the X5 M F95 have their own pages.
The flip side of the hot-vee layout: a cross-plane V8 whose uneven rumble is rounded off by the turbines, then reduced by a heavily compartmentalised factory system to a deep breath, to the point of passing for a mere six-cylinder. With the valves open, our cat-back lets the V8 rumble at every start-up and swell under acceleration, with far more present downshifts; with them closed, the SUV becomes serene again, with nothing to disturb conversation on board.
For fitting, no blowtorch: clamps, gaskets and about two hours under this large SUV, with a system bent to its VIN and valves controlled by the factory switch or the Rog remote.
The “Manifold” option sells the front section that follows the V8’s turbos; with factory engine management, it affects the sound and the mass, with power coming from an ECU remap. A 200-cell catalysed front section keeps this family V8 able to control its emissions; the 100-cell is accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. As for material, 304 stainless steel nurtures the depth of the rumble, while titanium lightens the rear.

Questions about the BMW X5 M50i G05 4.4TT exhaust.
Can the X6 M50i or the X5 M60i take the X5 M50i system?
They are not listed for this system; the facelifted X5 M60i has its own page, and for an X6 M50i G06, see its own.
What power does an X5 M50i reach at Stage 2?
The page publishes 700 hp and 980 Nm, with front section and ECU remap entrusted to a specialist; the cat-back on its own is happy with the standard map.
A modified X5 M50i has to go through the vehicle inspection: what should I do?
Close the valves again, for a V8 as discreet as from the factory, and keep a front section that cleans the gases, factory or 200-cell; the 100-cell is accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules, and the decat version is reserved for track use.
Why does the X5 M50i’s V8 sound like a six-cylinder from the factory?
Because its turbos inside the V round off the tone and the factory system reduces it further; our cat-back lets the V8’s rumble return with the valves open.
Does a large equipped V8 SUV stay comfortable on long journeys?
Yes, with the valves closed, the cruising silencer does its work and the X5 stays calm; the V8 only reveals itself when you ask.
BMW X5 M50i G05 4.4TT: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW X5 M50i G05 4.4TT: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
