Valved Exhaust System for Mazda MX-5 NB (1998-2005)
Configuration
Mazda MX-5 NB Valved Exhaust System (1998-2005)
Valves
Operated by remote control, factory-paired.
Estimated at 0.50 m from the outlet, 45°, 2,000 rpm with a warm engine. Allow ± 2 dB depending on the engine and measuring point. A 3 dB difference is audible in a direct comparison; 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.
Configuration guide

The Mazda MX-5 NB exhaust in detail.
The second generation of the roadster, the 1998 to 2005 MX-5 NB keeps the recipe that made the NA a success: lightness, rear-wheel drive, balance, and that Jinba Ittai connecting driver and car. Our data gives it 146 hp and 165 Nm, from a naturally aspirated four-cylinder that loves to rev.
In this philosophy, sound matters as much as numbers, and the factory exhaust keeps it muted. The Rog valved cat-back, also known as a valve exhaust, gives it a lively tone, an expressive climb and light crackles on the overrun when the valves are open; once closed, the NB becomes a relaxed roadster again for everyday journeys. Its NA and ND 2.0 siblings have other pages, and your NB’s serial number is checked before the system is manufactured.
Fitted with clamps and gaskets, without welding, the system takes about two hours in the workshop; the valves keep the factory control if there is one, otherwise the Rog remote operates them.
For those tuning their roadster, the page also sells, under the “Manifold” option, the front part carrying the catalytic converter; on a naturally aspirated engine of this displacement, a matching ECU remap remains a matter of a few per cent, roughly 3 to 8%, and the NB’s appeal lies elsewhere. An NB still used for Sunday drives will keep its emissions control with the 200-cell version, while a 100-cell will be judged according to the vehicle and your country’s rules and a decat part will remain confined to track use. That leaves the material: 304 stainless steel for those who drive in the rain and winter, titanium for those who count every kilo, with around 40% less weight.

Questions about the Mazda MX-5 NB exhaust.
Does the MX-5 NB system fit an NA or an ND?
Each MX-5 generation gets its own parts: the NA and the ND 2.0 have their own pages, and the 1998 to 2005 NB is covered here, after checking your roadster’s VIN.
Should the MX-5 NB go on the dyno after fitting the system?
Not needed with the cat-back alone, which works with the original engine management. With the front part, an ECU remap would only add a few per cent on this 146 hp naturally aspirated engine.
Vehicle inspection in a modified MX-5 NB: what should stay stock?
The front part, or its 200-cell version, so that the catalytic converter stays active, with the valves closed for a well-behaved voice. An NB in 100-cell form will be judged according to the vehicle and your country; decat, it is reserved for the track.
Why does titanium make sense on an MX-5 NB?
Because the MX-5 lives on its lightness: for the same design, titanium weighs around 40% less than 304 stainless steel. Stainless steel remains the robust choice, with a rounder sound, for those who drive all year round.
Mazda MX-5 NB: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
Mazda MX-5 NB: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
