    A question about this exhaust?

    Mercedes-AMGE63 W212

    The Mercedes-AMG E63 W212 / S212 6.2 exhaust in detail.

Between 2009 and 2011, the E63 W212 saloon still received the big 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8, the first engine designed entirely by AMG: 525 hp and 630 Nm with no forced induction at all. The torque is plentiful from low down, but it is at high revs that this engine comes alive, and this blend of comfort and brutality remains rare in a saloon of this size. The E63 W212 5.5 twin-turbo that followed and the E63 W213 each have their own page.

At idle, the rumble is deep and uneven, the signature of a cross-plane crankshaft; as the revs rise it turns into a hoarse roar. No turbo muffles this sound: the exhaust almost single-handedly decides what you hear, and the factory one holds it back to spare the passengers. The Rog valved cat-back gives it back its place, with a commanding start-up and acceleration you can hear from afar; with the valves closed, the E63 goes back to being the family grand tourer.

The system is built to your VIN, then fitted in about two hours with clamps and gaskets, without any welding. The factory valve control is kept where it exists; otherwise, a two-button Rog remote takes care of it.

On this naturally aspirated V8, the “Manifold” option concerns the catalysed front section at the manifold outlets. Its design affects cylinder filling at high revs, and the gain, real but modest, remains in the order of 3 to 8% with an ECU remap. A 200-cell front section keeps emissions control; with 100 cells, acceptance depends on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat variant is reserved for track use. Titanium or 304 stainless steel: on a V8 of this calibre, the former brings a more metallic tone and around 40% less mass.

    Questions about the Mercedes-AMG E63 W212 / S212 6.2 V8 exhaust.

Does this system for the naturally aspirated E63 W212 6.2 suit the 5.5 twin-turbo version that came later?

No, the switch to twin-turbo changed the whole system, hence a separate page for the 5.5. This page concerns the W212 saloon and the S212 estate in 6.2 form, built from 2009 to 2011. Sending the VIN is enough to clear up any doubt before manufacturing.

What can you expect from an ECU remap on the E63 W212 6.2?

Measured gains, as on any naturally aspirated engine: our data gives 572 hp and 693 Nm at Stage 2, against 525 hp and 630 Nm stock. The map mainly works on response and cylinder filling at high revs; the cat-back on its own does without one.

Mercedes-AMG E63 W212 6.2 V8 with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?

With the cat-back only or the 200-cell sports catalytic converter, emissions control is retained: present the car with the valves closed. The 100-cell brings more sound and flow, and whether it is accepted at the emissions test depends on the car and local rules; the decat version is intended for track use.

Can an E63 W212 6.2 be kept discreet for family journeys?

Yes, simply close the valves: the flow then passes through the silencer and the saloon regains the calm Mercedes intended. The roar only returns when you open them again, via the factory control or the Rog remote.

Does the E63 S212 6.2 estate take the same system as the saloon?

Yes. The W212 saloon and the S212 estate take the same Rog system: same chassis, same V8 M156, same clamp-and-gasket fitting. Your VIN is only used to confirm the version and model year before manufacturing.

    Mercedes-AMG E63 W212 / S212 6.2 V8: Does a valved exhaust system drone?

No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.

    Mercedes-AMG E63 W212 / S212 6.2 V8: straight pipe or resonator?

On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
