Valved Exhaust System for Mercedes-AMG SLS C197 / R197 6.2 V8 (2011-2014)
Configuration
Mercedes-AMG SLS C197 / R197 Valved Exhaust System (2011-2014)
Valves
Operated by remote control, factory-paired.
Estimated at 0.50 m from the outlet, 45°, 2,000 rpm with a warm engine. Allow ± 2 dB depending on the engine and measuring point. A 3 dB difference is audible in a direct comparison; 10 dB sounds roughly twice as loud.
Configuration guide
Sound intensity with the valves open, on a scale of 0 to 10.
| Configuration | Intensity |

The Mercedes-AMG SLS C197 / R197 exhaust in detail.
Front mid-mounted engine, dry-sump lubrication to sit it very low, dual-clutch gearbox moved to the rear axle: the SLS C197 is built around its 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8, with 571 hp and 650 Nm and no forced induction. The page covers the 2011 to 2014 model years; 2010 is not covered.
An SLS is driven as much by ear as at the wheel. Its V8 has a big-engine voice, muffled and choppy at idle, which becomes a broad thunder at full load, amplified by the long bonnet. The factory exhaust delivers a polite version of it. With the valves open, the Rog cat-back gives that thunder back its full breadth, acceleration that resonates and a climb full of depth; with the valves closed, you leave a residential area without being noticed.
Fitting in about two hours, clamps and gaskets, no welding, built to your VIN, with trapezoidal tailpipes specific to the SLS. Original valve control retained if it exists; otherwise, a two-button Rog remote. Some call it a valve exhaust: same principle, same freedom.
Here, the front part sold under the “Manifold” option really is a manifold: it collects the gases at the outlet of each cylinder, with an integrated catalytic converter. Its design matters for cylinder filling at high revs; with an ECU remap, the gain remains modest, with our data publishing 625 hp and 704 Nm at Stage 2. 200-cell manifolds maintain emissions control, the right choice for an SLS driven on the open road. With 100 cells, acceptance will depend on the car and the rules in your country; without a catalytic converter, the manifolds are reserved for track use, away from open roads. On such a focused car, the roughly 40% weight saved by titanium over 304 stainless steel speaks for itself.

Questions about the Mercedes-AMG SLS C197 / R197 6.2 V8 exhaust.
Can the SLS Roadster R197 take the SLS C197 system?
Yes. The C197 coupé and the R197 Roadster take the same Rog system, with the same 6.2-litre V8 and the same clamp-and-gasket fitting. 2010 SLS cars are not covered by our page: for them, send us the VIN before manufacturing.
Is an ECU remap worth it on the SLS C197?
On a naturally aspirated engine of this calibre, it mainly sharpens response and top-end reach: the page publishes 625 hp and 704 Nm at Stage 2, against 571 hp and 650 Nm as standard. The cat-back alone does very well without any electronic intervention.
Do the manifolds bring anything to the SLS’s V8?
Yes, more so than on a turbocharged engine, as their geometry affects cylinder filling at high revs. The measured gain remains modest and requires an ECU remap; without one, it is mainly the sound that gains depth.
Before a vehicle inspection, which manifolds and which settings should be kept on an SLS C197?
Valves closed, with the factory manifolds or their 200-cell version, for intact emissions control and a stock volume. 100-cell manifolds will be accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules. The decat version is reserved for track use, which rules it out for the inspection.
Mercedes-AMG SLS C197 / R197 6.2 V8: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
