The BMW 135i E82 / E88 exhaust in detail.
A short, light, rear-wheel-drive 1 Series coupé with a 3.0-litre inline-six under the bonnet: the 135i E82 is a rarity that enthusiasts seek out. Two engines succeeded each other with identical specifications, 306 hp and 400 Nm, first the N54 with its two turbos, then the N55 with its single twin-scroll turbo. The cat-back is common to both, but the downpipe is not, which is why we ask you to specify your engine with the VIN when ordering.
Listen to a freed BMW inline-six: a smooth, round song that gains density with the revs. In this small coupé, the turbines and then a heavily baffled factory exhaust bring it down almost to a murmur, even though the car accelerates hard. With the valves open, our valved exhaust delivers a frank rumble at start-up, then a continuous climb to the next gear; closed again, they let the 135i leave the neighbourhood early in the morning without waking anyone.
No welding or cutting under the body: band clamps, gaskets and about two hours on a lift. A 135i already fitted with factory valves keeps controlling them, the others receive the Rog remote, whose box slips into the boot. The wider, more powerful 1M has its own system and its own page.
On this turbo coupé, the “Manifold” option actually sells the downpipe, which carries the catalytic converter at the turbine outlet. Its value is measured mainly with an ECU remap; on its own, it adds voice and removes a few kilos. For a coupé that goes out every day, the 200-cell downpipe keeps emissions control; its 100-cell variant will be accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. For the cat-back, 304 stainless steel or titanium around 40% lighter, in brushed, gold or purple finish.

Questions about the BMW 135i E82 / E88 exhaust.
Can the 135i E88 convertible take the same system as the E82 coupé?
Yes. The E82 coupé and the E88 convertible take the same Rog system: same chassis, same N54 or N55 six-cylinder, same clamp-and-gasket fitting. Your VIN is only used to confirm the engine and model year before manufacturing.
On a 135i, does the power come from the exhaust or from the map?
From the map, once the downpipe is fitted: our data gives Stage 2 figures of 380 hp and 540 Nm for the original N54, and 400 hp and 560 Nm for the N55 introduced from March 2010, while the cat-back on its own works with the standard ECU.
The tuned 135i coupé has to go through its vehicle inspection: how should you go about it?
With the valves closed again, the coupé returns to a volume close to stock, and emissions control stays active with the factory front section as with the 200-cell downpipe; a 100-cell is accepted or not depending on the vehicle and your country’s rules, and the decat version is reserved for track use.
N54 or N55: how do I know which downpipe matches my coupé?
Two turbos under the bonnet indicate an N54, a single one an N55, and the two parts are not interchangeable; if in doubt, the VIN is all we need to identify the engine and lock in the right part number.
My coupé does a lot of dual-carriageway driving: won’t the silencer drone?
As long as the valves stay closed, the gases pass through the silencer designed for cruising, so the 135i keeps a settled cabin at a steady speed and only speaks up when you decide.
BMW 135i E82 / E88: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW 135i E82 / E88: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.

BMW 135i E82 / E88: a six-cylinder in a compact coupé, the exhaust system guide
The 135i E82 is one of those BMWs enthusiasts seek out: a compact 1 Series coupé, rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged inline-six with 306 hp and 400 Nm. That balance is rare, and so is the potential. The only false...
