The BMW X4 M40i F26 exhaust in detail.
The sharpest version of the first-generation coupé SUV, the X4 M40i F26 pushes the N55, a 3.0-litre inline-six with a single twin-scroll turbo, to 360 hp and 465 Nm, sent to all four wheels through xDrive. Built from 2016 to 2018, it stands apart from the 306 hp xDrive35i, presented on another page.
The inline-six has a voice few layouts can match, smooth and silky at idle, then increasingly hoarse as it approaches the red line. On the factory M40i, however, this progression stays in the background, as the exhaust favours neutrality. With the valves open, our cat-back puts the N55 in the foreground: the bass takes shape, climbs can be heard all the way and gear changes gain presence; with the valves closed, the X4 regains a calmer sound.
On this coupé SUV, about two hours is enough to fit an exhaust bent to match the VIN, no welding, with clamps and gaskets; the valves stay under the factory control or switch to the Rog remote.
The “Manifold” option sells the N55’s downpipe, with its catalytic converter; only with a map does it translate into horsepower, and without one it simply enriches the voice. On this first-generation M40i, the 200-cell downpipe keeps exhaust gas treatment, the 100-cell is accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. This valved cat-back comes in 304 stainless steel or in titanium around 40% lighter, in three colours.

Questions about the BMW X4 M40i F26 3.0T exhaust.
X4 M40i F26 or xDrive35i: are two different exhausts needed?
No, the M40i has its own page and its own system; your VIN lets us confirm your SUV’s compatibility before manufacturing.
Can the X4 M40i’s 360 hp N55 go further?
Yes, the page publishes Stage 2 figures of 440 hp and 630 Nm, with a downpipe and a map at an approved tuner, a gain felt above all in torque; the cat-back alone remains compatible with the factory management.
BMW X4 M40i F26 3.0T with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
With the cat-back only or the 200-cell sports catalytic converter, emissions control is retained: present the car with the valves closed. The 100-cell brings more sound and flow, and whether it is accepted at the emissions test depends on the car and local rules; the decat version is intended for track use.
Is an X4 M40i F26 newer than 2018 covered?
The F26 generation ends in 2018; for the X4 M40i G02 that succeeds it, see its dedicated page.
Stainless steel or titanium: which is better on the X4 M40i?
304 stainless steel keeps the N55’s gravelly grain rounder; titanium is around 40% lighter for the same design and brightens the note at high revs.
BMW X4 M40i F26 3.0T: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW X4 M40i F26 3.0T: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.
