The BMW X6 M F86 exhaust in detail.
The X6 M F86 is, mechanically, an X5 M F85 with a coupé silhouette: the same S63, extensively revised for this second generation, a 4.4-litre V8 with its turbos housed in the vee, 575 hp and 750 Nm, with thrust that does not fade all the way to the top of the rev counter. Our page covers it from 2015 to 2018, with no extension to the non-M X6 F16; according to the guide, the system is shared with the X5 M F85.
Under the F86’s bonnet, the S63 growls more sharply than a muscle car V8, with a taut rumble that hardens as the revs rise, but its factory exhaust filters it so well that only the thrust betrays its power. With the valves open, our cat-back lets the V8 be heard from start-up, then a muffled wave punctuated by bangs on lift-off; with the valves closed, the coupé SUV regains the discretion of a grand tourer.
Nothing is welded under this X6 M: the system bent to its VIN connects with clamps and gaskets in about two hours, with the factory valve control or the Rog remote.
The “Manifold” option sells the S63’s downpipes; fitted on their own, they change the sound and the weight, with power coming from a map that must spare the transmission and cooling. The 200-cell downpipes are enough to keep this X6 M’s emissions control for the road; the 100-cell ones are accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use. As for material, 304 stainless steel thickens the rumble, while titanium is around 40% lighter.

Questions about the BMW X6 M F86 4.4TT exhaust.
Does the X6 M F86 system also fit a non-M X6 F16?
No, this system does not extend to the regular F16, which has its own page; this one targets the 2015 to 2018 X6 M F86, and your VIN confirms compatibility.
Can the S63 in an X6 M F86 handle an advanced tune?
The published figures are 715 hp and 890 Nm, with downpipes and an ECU remap at an approved tuner; the transmission and cooling handle the load, and the cat-back alone demands nothing of the sort.
BMW X6 M F86 4.4TT with a Rog exhaust: what should you know about vehicle inspection?
With the cat-back only or the 200-cell sports catalytic converter, emissions control is retained: present the car with the valves closed. The 100-cell brings more sound and flow, and whether it is accepted at the emissions test depends on the car and local rules; the decat version is intended for track use.
Is a different system needed for the X6 M F86 and the X5 M F85?
Our guide pairs them, since only the body sets them apart; we keep one page per SUV and always check the VIN before manufacturing.
Does the S63 in an X6 M sound like an American V8?
No, its voice is gruffer and tighter, typical of V8s with central turbos; with the valves open, it is this dense rumble that comes through, with bangs on the overrun.
BMW X6 M F86 4.4TT: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
BMW X6 M F86 4.4TT: straight pipe or resonator?
On this model, two characters at the same price: the straight pipe for the raw sound of your engine, unfiltered, or the resonator for a rounder and slightly softer voice. Either way, the exhaust stays fully sporty. Learn more: Exhaust resonator: what does it do? Straight pipe or resonator, which sound to choose.

BMW X5 M F85 and X6 M F86: the second-generation S63, the exhaust system guide
The second generation of BMW M SUVs, the X5 M F85 and X6 M F86 share, from 2015 to 2018, the same 4.4-litre biturbo S63 V8, with 575 hp and 750 Nm. Their factory exhaust has two flaws: it muffles...
