    FordMustang S197

The Ford Mustang GT S197 V8 5.0 exhaust in detail.

In 2011, the Mustang GT S197 adopted the Coyote, a 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 with four camshafts and a rare appetite for revs for an American engine: 418 hp and 529 Nm. This page covers the 2011 and 2012 model years; the S550 Mustangs, V8 GT and EcoBoost alike, have their own pages, and your VIN lets us confirm compatibility before manufacturing.

In Europe, the S197 leaves the factory far more muffled than its American cousins, and the Coyote’s sound potential sleeps under the silencers. The Rog valved cat-back, also known as a valve exhaust, wakes it up: a present rumble at idle, a thunderous charge and crisp bangs on the overrun, valves open. With the valves closed, the Mustang becomes socially acceptable again for discreet journeys.

Fitting in about two hours, with clamps and gaskets, without any welding; the valves keep their factory control if the car has it, and otherwise the Rog remote, with its box housed in the boot, takes care of it.

Here the “Manifold” option sells genuine manifolds, the ones that collect the gases from all eight cylinders and house the original catalytic converter. On the Coyote, their design matters: with an ECU remap, the gain remains real but modest, around 3 to 8%, and without one it is the voice that gets richer. The S197 keeps its emissions control with the 200-cell manifolds, the 100-cell ones are accepted or not depending on the car and the rules in your country, and the decat version is reserved for track use, for a muscle car that also has its place at a track day. Under the S197’s bumper, the four round tailpipes come in 304 stainless steel, which keeps the Coyote’s bass, or titanium around 40% lighter, available in brushed, gold or purple.

Questions about the Ford Mustang GT S197 V8 5.0 exhaust.

Do the manifolds on this page fit a 2013 or 2014 Mustang GT S197 V8?

The page is designed for the 2011 and 2012 GT S197, and the manifolds offered are not listed for 2013 and 2014; for those two model years, only a check of your Mustang’s VIN, before manufacturing, can provide the answer.

To make the most of the manifolds, does the Mustang S197’s 5.0 Coyote need an ECU remap?

Yes, it is the remap that converts their better cylinder filling into horsepower, whereas the cat-back alone makes do with the factory map. The Coyote responds well, but on a naturally aspirated engine the gain stays around 3 to 8%.

Before taking a Mustang GT S197 V8 for vehicle inspection, what should I check?

That the valves are closed, to bring the V8 back close to its European voice, and that the manifolds fitted are the factory ones or the 200-cell, catalytic converters in service. 100-cell manifolds will be accepted or not depending on the car and your country, decat ones only run on the circuit.

Why change the manifolds on the Mustang S197’s naturally aspirated V8?

Because without a turbo, their geometry directly affects cylinder filling and the Coyote’s tone. This is the part that matters for anyone tuning the engine; if you are only after the voice, the cat-back alone is enough.

Does the Mustang GT S197 convertible take the same system as the coupé?

Yes. The S197 coupé and convertible take the same Rog system: same chassis, same V8 5.0 Coyote, same clamp-and-gasket fitting. Your VIN is only used to confirm the version and model year before manufacturing.

Ford Mustang GT S197 V8 5.0: Does a valved exhaust system drone?

No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
