The Porsche 911 Carrera 996.1 exhaust in detail.
The first 911 with a water-cooled flat-six, the Carrera 996.1 introduced this engine in 3.4-litre form: 300 hp and 350 Nm, for model years 1998 to 2001. The 3.6-litre 996.2 that succeeded it has its own page, as does the 996 Turbo. The Carrera 4 is not specified on our page; your VIN, checked before manufacturing, removes any doubt.
At idle, the flat-six grumbles with a slightly uneven beat; higher up the revs it turns into a metallic scream. On the 996.1 this transformation stays distant, filtered by an exhaust designed first for comfort. With the valves open, the Rog cat-back links the two registers seamlessly, from the low notes to the howl; with the valves closed, the 911 becomes a sports car again that handles daily journeys without ever tiring.
The page sells the cat-back only, in 304 stainless steel or titanium: the factory front section stays in place, and with it the emissions control. Without an ECU remap, expect sound and a little less weight; with a full tune, the page lists 336 hp and 378 Nm in Stage 2. For those after weight savings, titanium removes around 40% of the weight for the same design and comes in a brushed, gold or purple finish.
In the workshop, nothing irreversible: band clamps, gaskets, about two hours on a lift, no cutting. The Rog remote controls the valves from the cabin, unless your car has a factory control, which is then retained. At the rear of the 996, the tips can be chrome, gloss black or blued titanium, depending on the look you want.

Questions about the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.4 type 996.1 exhaust.
My 996 is a Carrera 4: does the 996.1 system suit it?
Our page refers to the 3.4-litre Carrera 996 without specifying all-wheel drive. So we check against your Carrera 4’s VIN before any manufacturing, rather than claiming undocumented compatibility.
What gain can a remapped 996.1 hope for?
No new map is required for the cat-back; if you choose to have one, the page quotes 336 hp and 378 Nm in Stage 2 for the 996.1, compared with 300 hp and 350 Nm stock; the actual result depends on the car and the tuner.
Does taking a modified 996.1 through the vehicle inspection call for any particular precaution?
Presented with the valves closed, it returns to a sound level close to factory. As the cat-back leaves the front section and its catalytic converters in place, emissions control is not altered, and the page offers no decat version.
From order to fitting, what lead time should I expect for a 996.1?
Twenty working days separate the confirmation of the order from delivery, as the exhaust is manufactured for your 911. Shipping is free and tracked; that leaves about two hours of fitting at the mechanic of your choice.
Coupé or convertible: does the 911 Carrera 3.4 996.1 take the same system?
Yes. On the 911 Carrera 3.4 996.1, coupé and convertible share the flat-six and the same Rog system, fitted with clamps and gaskets. Your VIN is only used to confirm the version and model year before manufacturing.
Porsche 911 Carrera 3.4 type 996.1: Does a valved exhaust system drone?
No. With the valves closed, the gases flow through the whole rear silencer and the cabin stays calm at a steady speed. Our Rog exhausts are designed to avoid drone. Learn more: Why our systems stay calm on the motorway.
